Is Lemar Hoskins really dead in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier?

At the end of the fourth episode of Disney Plus‘ The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, we witnessed probably one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s darker moments when John Walker, the new Captain America  (and U.S. Agent), killed one of the Flag Smashers.

“Do you remember how scared we were when we took the serum. Felt like my veins were on fire, prayed it’d kill me.”

The Super Soldier Serum, a century old concoction

For those who need a reminder, when Steve Rogers was given the super soldier serum he was put in a massive machine, and let’s just say he didn’t sound too comfortable while the serum took effect. Even Bucky was tied down and experimented on with HYDRA when he had been administered the serum.

Same concept applies in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier. The Flag Smashers, all who are super soldiers had taken the serum. In episode 3, Karli Morgenthau said that taking it was as if she felt like her veins were on fire.

During one of the fights, Zemo was seen crushing all the remaining vials of the serum, before getting hit in the head by John Walker. Before the scene ends however, we see one unharmed vial left, leaving us to wonder if Walker decided to take it.

Is Lemar Hoskins really dead in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier?

While we there is no mention of it and we don’t see Walker physically take the serum, the answer becomes pretty clear in the final battle of the episode. When fighting the Flag Smashers, John Walker was seen bending a metal pipe easily as if it were a pool noodle, surprising Sam in the process.

But if you think about it: John didn’t take time to let his body adjust to serum. The serum, which effects the person on all levels psychological as it does physical, most likely overwhelmed Walker’s body and mind. So, when Karli kicked Lemar into one of the columns, she herself noticed what she did – it was written all over her face. However, when John went over to feel for a pulse, chances are, all he could feel was the serum in his veins. So perhaps he just wasn’t thinking straight and Lemar was unresponsive but still alive?

But even if he was dead, John Walker knew Karli kicked Lemar into that column, but chose to run after a different Flag Smasher. Walker killed that man in broad daylight, with phones filming every second of it.

Walker stands with a blood-stained shield that once represented hope. It’s safe to say hope is the last thing it represents now.
