The Falcon and the Winter Soldier hasn’t shied away from addressing Steve Rogers’ absence in the lives of Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes, but it hasn’t actually addressed his fate… or has it?

It’s a brave new world for the Marvel Cinematic Universe in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. A brave new world in which people are still finding their place after the infamous Blip. A brave new world in which the same old problems as before still exist. A brave new world unsure of what to make of superheroes. And a brave new world without Captain America.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier‘s focus has been to address the legacy that Steve Rogers left behind by telling the story of his rightful successor, Sam Wilson, and the one man rooting for him to take up the mantle of Captain America, Bucky Barnes. But it has also avoided addressing the fate of Captain America himself as the Disney Plus show has remained quiet about the fate of the original Star-Spangled Man.

Is Captain America dead in the MCU in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier?

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier has consistently addressed the fate of Steve Rogers without actually addressing the fate of Steve Rogers. Characters in the show have repeatedly told us that he was “gone” and that he wasn’t coming back. It’s clearly designed to make it look like he died and perhaps that is indeed what people in that universe think. MCU fans, however, know otherwise, don’t they?

We last saw Steve in Avengers: Endgame. After defeating Thanos, he traveled back in time to return the Infinity Stones to their rightful locations. However, he also saw this as an opportunity to leave his life of never-ending heroics behind and stop being that man out of time. And he did that by returning to the woman he loved: Peggy Carter.

Steve found Peggy and seemingly lived a long, happy and healthy life with her, creating an offshoot timeline of the original. He then returned to the main timeline to give Sam the shield and pass on the legacy of Captain America to him.

While there is a possibility that the aged Star-Spangled Man With A Plan passed away peacefully from old age, the more likely theory is that he simply returned to his own timeline to reunite with his wife Peggy, leaving the main timeline without a Steve Rogers. If this is indeed the case, then Sam and Bucky would have likely told the government that he died after the battle with Thanos.

The original Captain America’s fate in the MCU remains a mystery but, in all likelihood, Steve Rogers is still living his best life – the one he always wanted to live.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier streams its finale next week on Friday on Disney+.
