Amazon’s Invincible season 1, episode 7 review: We Need To Talk
By Mark Lynch
Nolan reminds everyone why he’s the most powerful person on Earth in this week’s episode of Amazon Prime Invincible.
Previously on Amazon Prime’s Invincible, Mark Grayson (a.k.a. Invincible) had to leave his girlfriend Amber and best friend William alone while he became his alter ego. Though William realized Mark was saving them, Amber didn’t. She thought he left her in danger, this ending their relationship.
Meanwhile, Debbie searched for clues on Nolan (Omni-Man) and his involvement in the death of the Guardians of the Globe back in episode 1. She outright asked why he did it. Of course, Nolan denied it.
Judging by the title of this episode, however, Nolan is going to have some explaining to do in “We Need To Talk”.
Invincible opening
One of the great things about Invincible is that the show does not waste time. Each episode picks up where the previous one left off. In this case, it immediately follows up with Debbie – who is dealing with Nolan – and Amber – who is dealing with Mark. In both instances, things didn’t go well. Looking at it, you can’t blame either of them.
First, Debbie kicks Nolan out of the house for lying. She refuses to trust him anymore and why should she? As Debbie said, he’s been lying to her for months. He killed their friends. She has no reason to trust him. Nolan, however, says they’ll talk later and flies through the ceiling of the house. Apparently he doesn’t care about secret identities anymore.
Amber and Mark’s situation is a little different. She reveals that she knew Mark was Invincible for weeks. Mark doesn’t understand why she was mad if she knew. Like Debbie, Amber tells him it was a trust issue. It’s a little different here. In some ways, it makes sense. Amber should feel betrayed because he didn’t trust her. On the other hand, it’s not just Mark that’s in danger if his identity is out there. Furthermore, it’s not like they knew each other for a long time. This one will have people debating who’s right and wrong for a while.
New human body
Robot has been secretive for a few episodes now. He took Rex’s blood, broke the Mauler Twins out and acted weird around Monster Girl. Here, we finally see what he’s been up to as it turns out he is making a clone of Rex – a body that he used to transfer his consciousness.
Now in his new body (and named Rudy), Robot has an emotional moment. He breathes his last breath and it seems like a relief. With Rudy in his new teenage body, he has one thing left to do: Time to take care of the Mauler Twins. By, “take care of” this writer means that Robot sends them back to prison. However, that plan that was interrupted by an emergency call.
This part was full of sorrow – that stuck around until the end. First, you see that Robot in his human form was in constant pain – even breathing was torture for him. If that wasn’t enough, we find out that he was content with living like this until he met Monster Girl. It was sweet. Then, seeing him die and be happy for the new him was incredibly sad.
To end it with the Mauler Twins being afraid of a giant robot wrapped everything up. It would have been weird if this scene had ended in a depressing moment.
“400 billion for the world’s most expensive nose bleed.” – Cecil
This writer truly understands that Cecil has a job to do. But, he surely couldn’t have thought this would work? Did he think that guns would do anything except annoy Omni-Man? Those had to have been his best soldiers and they died quicker than they came and with much less effort. With the exception of two people, everyone Cecil sent to spy on Nolan was brutally killed.
And then, in a desperate attempt to slow him down, they “dropped the hammer.” The hammer beam of light from a space satellite. It killed who knows how many animals and trees and didn’t stop him. In fact, it barely slowed him down. Then, he flew through the beam of light and destroyed Cecil’s weapon.
People didn’t think Omni-Man was that strong because of how the Guardians of the Globe almost defeated him. Well, as you see, he was holding back. A 400 billion dollar weapon and all it did was make him mad and give him a nose bleed. Omni-Man showcased why he’s the most powerful hero in the world and he did it with ease. A perfect way to remind viewers that he’s the real deal.
Invincible review
Just, wow. This episode of Invincible was actually flawless. There have been tremendous episodes all season, but none of them were quite like this one. Featuring the perfect combination of emotional moments, hilarious banter (thank you, Rex) and action, this incredibly enjoyable episode of the TV show flew by. One minute we’re watching Nolan fly through a roof and next Omni-Man is killing Immortal (again). The ideal episode to lead right into the final one, this was a non-stop thrill-ride.
Invincible rumination
Watching Rudy talk to Rex was hilarious. Rex reacted just like you’d expect: With a bunch of cursing and anger.
Atom Eve telling Mark off is one of the first of many times she’ll do that in this series. She’s the most important part of his life.
Nolan and Cecil’s conversation is one of the best parts of the series. It isn’t always about the action; sometimes it’s the moments like this that really resonate.
Cecil admitting himself says a lot about who he is. He doesn’t enjoy what he does, but knows it’s necessary.
