Best DC movies and shows on HBO Max: Watchmen series
We know, we know. Watchmen isn’t an animated series but, like a good DC Villain, we’re all about an unexpected plot twist and some unexpected chaos!
Watchmen has always been a tough property to adapt, and the Zack Snyder version that came out in 2009 film had about the same effect on fans and critics as Batman V. Superman, less than ideal, to say the least. But then someone decided to make a story taking place 34 years after the event of Alan Moore’s narrative, which had some very unexpected results.
Damon Lindelof, known for his work on Lost, Prometheus, and The Leftovers, created what he called the remix of the source material for HBO that sees several vigilantes from the comic return like Ozymandias, Silk Spectre, Hooded Justice, and Dr. Manhattan. New characters include Sister Night, Lady Trieu, and Looking Glass.
The series follows a detective known as Sister Night, who investigates a white-supremacists group called the Seventh Cavalry after her friend, the police chief, is murdered. Her search unveils an out-of-this-world conspiracy from different factions and secrets from the past regarding what really happened when people started putting on masks and calling themselves vigilantes.
The poignant show received 26 Primetime Emmys winning 11 and features stellar performances from its cast, including Regina King, Jeremy Irons, Tim Blake Nelson, Louis Gossett Jr., and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. There are nine excellent episodes of Watchmen with an ending that triumphantly sticks the landing in a satisfying and thought-provoking manner.
