Marvel Studios has tapped Chinaka Hodge as head writer and showrunner for Ironheart in the Dominique Thorne-led miniseries.

With The Falcon and the Winter Soldier having ended its first season last week and Loki about to come out this summer, there is a lot of excitement about the Marvel Cinematic Universe streaming shows right now. One of the other Disney Plus shows on the horizon that there are some new developments on is the forthcoming six-part Ironheart series.

Riri Williams aka Ironheart, as revealed during the Disney Investor Day presentation, will be portrayed by Dominique Thorne. Now, it has been revealed by The Hollywood Reporter that Marvel Studios has enlisted Chinaka Hodge to spearhead the series as head writer.

Who is Ironheart’s head writer?

Chinaka Hodge is a poet, educator, playwright and screenwriter. She graduated from NYU’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study and then continued her studies in the School of Cinematic Arts at the University of Southern California where she earned her MFA in Writing for Film and TV in 2012.

In 2013, Hodge became a Sundance Feature Film lab Fellow for her script “700th & Int’l”. Aside from contributions to both education and literature, she is also a founding member of the hip-hop ensemble The Getback with Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal.

She has worked in TV on TNT’s Snowpiercer and her poems, editorials, interviews and prose have been featured in Newsweek, San Francisco Magazine, Believer Magazine, PBS, NPR, CNN, C-Span and two seasons of HBO’s Def Poetry.

Who is Riri Williams and what is Ironheart about?

Created by writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Mike Deodato Jr., Riri Williams first made her comic book debut in the pages of Invincible Iron Man Vol.2 No.7 in 2016. A 15-year-old prodigy studying engineering at MIT, Riri developed her very own Iron Man suit from her dorm room, it was not long before she caught the watchful eye of the great Tony Stark himself and became a superhero.

Now, it is more than likely Marvel Studios will adapt Riri’s story a bit differently from the comics given the events of Avengers: Endgame. However, the MCU is known for both its originality and its loyalty to the source material, so it wouldn’t be surprising if there were some overlaps.

It’s not yet known whether Ironheart will arrive before Armor Wars, one possible direction the former could take would be to feature the star of the latter show, Don Cheadle’s James “Rhodey” Rhodes/War Machine in Stark’s place as her mentor as he tries to preserve his best friend’s legacy.

Whatever story awaits for Riri, Ironheart is making progress as it begins the slow journey to our screens.
