100 greatest comic book characters of all-time
By Mark Lynch
Greatest comic book characters – 2. Spider-Man
First comic book appearance: Amazing Fantasy No. 15
In this writer’s humble opinion, Spider-Man is the greatest hero of all time. If you look at all of the heroes on this list, Peter Parker does just as much or more with less. He doesn’t have the money, team, or living situation that would make his life remotely comfortable. Knowing all this, it’s impressive that he hasn’t completely lost his mind. Especially considering all he’s been through.
With the exception of a few characters, no one has been put through more than Peter Parker. It’s so bad that he named it Parker Luck. If anything good happens, believe something bad is coming just as bad. Yet, Spider-Man still gets up, dusts himself off, and continues to be a great hero without compromising his morals.
Greatest comic book characters – 1. Kate “Kitty” Pryde
First comic book appearance: Uncanny X-Men No. 129
People reading this number one spot might be confused, angry, or intrigued. For those of you who didn’t dismiss this, allow this writer to say this: It’s not just about accolades with Kitty Pryde. It starts with her growth and continues with her ongoing development.
Kitty Pryde has evolved and shown that she can do everything that the best heroes can and sometimes better. All while being hated and feared while saving lives. Her development is the blueprint to how to create a character from the ground up. Showing that you don’t need to kill a character and bring them back mysteriously for them to change.
Remember young, unsure, and immature Kitty Pryde? She’s gone on to do so much since then. She’s saved countless planets by phasing a bullet through multiple planets. Saving billions if not trillions of lives (Astonishing X-Men). How about taking over for the X-Men while Cyclops and Xavier were dead (X-Men Gold)? That’s not enough? Let’s look at her now in Marauder. She saves mutant lives every day and has learned that her more gentler side no longer works.
Kitty Pryde isn’t the best hero, villain, or in between. What she is, is the best comic book character around.
