Greatest comic book characters – 86. Mera

First comic book appearance: Aquaman No. 11

Underestimate Mera if you want. That’ll be your last mistake. Saying all she does is control water is like saying all The Flash does is run fast. She can drain the water from your body and turn it into a blade that can cut steel. Don’t allow her near an endless source. There’s nothing you’d be able to do. In the Injustice universe, she held back a title wave that was being controlled by the Greek God Poseidon.

Beyond her power, she’s a proud and strong woman. She doesn’t take any mess from anyone. That’s including the Justice League. She’s almost choked the life out of Batman and removed two Green Lantern’s rings at the same time. That kind of thing takes toughness and confidence.

Greatest comic book characters – 85. Hellboy

First comic book appearance: Dime Press No. 4

Hellboy is an easily recognized character. And that’s beyond his look. Granted, being a big red devil with a giant arm helps. His attitude and fighting ability made him a pop culture icon. The first Hellboy movie skyrocketed his popularity as well. His next two features may not have topped the movie charts, but that didn’t stop him from being an incredible character. When you’re not part of the big two comic book companies, it’s even more impressive. We’ll be talking about Hellboy for decades to come.
