Superman and Lois threw fans for a loop with a shocking twist in this week’s installment that revealed the truth about The Stranger. What does it all mean?

Superman and Lois is no stranger (pardon the pun) to shocking people. The show has single-handedly defied expectations since it premiered with its outstanding pilot episode back in February and it has continued to do so ever since.

The latest episode, “Man of Steel”, was directed by David Ramsey and even just writing the name of the episode down now, you realize how the clever twist was hidden in plain sight all along. But just what does Superman & Lois‘ big twist really mean?

Who is The Stranger in Superman and Lois?

The Stranger has been a mystery figure from another world that we were all led to believe was actually Lex Luthor. From the “Captain Luthor” namedrop in the pilot to all the Luthor references in the latest episode, it was really looking like we we had another Earth’s Lex Luthor on Earth-Prime. And still, fans were skeptical because post-Crisis On Infinite Earths Arrowverse established that no two doppelgangers can exist on the same Earth. So why wasn’t this Stranger or Jon Cryer’s Lex Luthor on Supergirl experiencing any difficulties?

That apparent “plot hole” was filled in this week’s installment as the series revealed that Captain Luthor was not another universe’s version of Lex but actually a man named John Henry Irons. And, much is the case with Earth-2’s Laurel Lance/Black Canary, he can exist on that earth because his Earth-1/Earth-Prime counterpart died.

Who is John Henry Irons (a.k.a. Steel)?

John Henry Irons is a classic DC Comics character also known as Steel. The character first debuted in the pages of DC Comics back in 1993 and he is portrayed as a genius engineer who builds a mechanized suit of armor with the ability to replicate the Man of Steel’s abilities. He also wields a hammer just like the one we saw Wolé Parks’ iteration wield in Superman and Lois.

You see now why “Man of Steel” was such a clever title?
