The Powerpuff Girls pilot will be reworked for The CW before a decision on its future is made.

As revealed by Deadline, Powerpuff, a live-action television series based on the Cartoon Network animated series The Powerpuff Girls will not be going to series just yet because its pilot needs to be reworked.

Powerpuff was one of the three superhero TV shows in development for The CW’s 2021 – 2022 TV season. While it was recently confirmed that DC Comics pilot Naomi had been ordered to series and that the Arrowverse Black Lightning spin-off Painkiller was not moving forward, Powerpuff‘s fate hinges on the retooling of the pilot.

Why was Powerpuff not picked up yet?

In this reboot based on the original series, the heroic triplets are reimagined as disillusioned twentysomethings who resent the fact that they lost their childhood to crime-fighting.

Warner Bros. TV Group President Channing Dungey addressed the challenges over adapting the property to live-action – which seems to be one of the aspects in the network’s decision to rework it. She said:

"“We’ve got a trio of terrific actresses at the center of that. I’m not going to say that it hasn’t been a challenge. Bringing a children’s cartoon into live-action adulthood has been a really fine line to walk, but I think we’ve done a pretty great job walking it.”"

CW chairman and CEO Mark Pedowitz revealed that the pilot was a “miss” but that he believes in the cast and creative team and saw “enough elements in there” so the network has decided to give it another shot.

More from TV

It will be interesting to see if Powerpuff will join Naomi as part of the network’s new line-up after Arrowverse spin-offs Green Arrow and the Canaries, Wonder Girl and now Painkiller were unfortunately not picked up.

Powerpuff stars Chloe Bennet, Dove Cameron, Yana Perrault, Donald Faison, Tom Kenny, Robyn Lively and Nicholas Podany. Diablo Cody and Heather Regnier are writing the pilot and serve as showrunners. Cody, Regnier, Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and David Madden are executive producers. Erika Kennair is credited as producer.

Powerpuff is produced by Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television. No release date has been confirmed.
