6. King T’Challa
Comic book: Black Panther No. 25
At the beginning of Ta-Nehisi Coates’ run of Black Panther, Coates started with turning Wakanda into a democracy. People wanted change in Wakanda since the old ways were no longer working. This leads to years of turmoil and fighting within Wakanda.
Later, T’Challa then went to outer space. While there, he became a slave and started a revolution that freed hundreds of people. That revolution caused a war that came from space to Wakanda. In the end, T’Challa and his forces helped stop the war and the death of Killmonger.
Now, T’Challa is king once again.
Why is this important?
Even before A Nation Under Our Feet, T’Challa was doubting himself. He felt like a failure as a king, brother and warrior. Despite all of his doubts, the readers didn’t have that same uncertainty. We also knew that T’Challa would be king again. However, this does lead to one question. What does that mean for the Avengers?
T’Challa is the leader and ambassador of the Avengers. Will this now lead to conflict? Wakanda says they want to stay out of other nations’ affairs so will this cause him to quit? Then again, the Avengers don’t work for a nation, they work for the world. This may be a conflict of interest for T’Challa as he could get torn between Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and his job as King of Wakanda.
