Marvel finally brings the X-Men, Avengers and Deadpool together in epic new crossover
By Mark Lynch
The Hellfire has begun and the X-Men are already dealing with issues within Krakoa and beyond.
In Marvel Comics, the Hellfire Gala is an event hosted by Krakoa. It’s an opportunity for the people of the world to come to Krakoa and see what the mutants are doing. The X-Men and the rest of the mutants have been keeping to themselves more than normal so opening their doors is a huge deal.
This is the first time humans have been allowed to come to their island nation. We saw celebrities like Rick Ross, Patton Oswalt, The Avengers, diplomats from around the world, The Shi’ar Empire, and even J. Jonah. Jameson.
There were three issues of the X-Men Hellfire Gala crossover event. These are the most important moments from those issues.
The ceremony begins
X-Men comic book: Marauders No. 21:
This was the perfect way to kick off the Hellfire Gala. Artist Matteo Lolli is one of the best comic book artists right now. He made everyone look as extravagant as you’d expect and made sure that all of the Gala outfits pop. You could see every small and direct difference in the designs, especially with all three of Emma’s wardrobe changes.
Writer Gerry Duggan did a fantastic job making the event fun. Things like Dr. Doom’s interaction with Emma Frost was hilarious. The moment Emma realized that Steve Rogers thought she reminded him of his mother was also hilarious because she couldn’t believe that’s where his mind went.
There were also nods to the future. Diplomats from all over the world seemed to discuss what they saw. Some of them looked concerned and scared while others seemed happy with what they were a part of. Also, not shocking, but Dr. Doom wasn’t impressed.
Behind the scenes
X-Men comic book: X-Force No. 20:
X-Force was charged with security (shocking). Sage was at the controls watching everyone, Quentin Quire was doing telepathic security checks of everyone who came to the Gala and Domino and Wolverine were there to stop anyone if things got physical – which they did when Deadpool showed up uninvited. Wolverine told him that this was a diplomatic summit and not a kegger. Of course, Wade didn’t care. In the end, Domino was the one who stopped Deadpool from entering the gala.
Meanwhile, Beast was up to know good, using the plants he got from Terra Verde (X-Force No. 10) to spy on other nations. He become increasingly more bold since Krakoa opened up; he may not be as sadistic as Dark Beast, but he’s still being sneaky and immoral. Emma told Sage that Beast will have to deal with the Quiet Counsel. However, Beast may not end up with Sabretooth because it appears that Xavier knows he was doing something.
Fight at the Gala
X-Men comic book: Hellions No. 12:
As you’ve read, the Hellfire Gala has been everything you’d expect from a diplomatic meeting. On the exterior, it was a fancy party where everyone looked good and socialized. There was beautiful music, celebrities, music and an open bar. Also, like most functions, some people were left off of the list. Among those people were the Hellions (except for Havoc, Psylocke and Mr. Sinister). The remaining members ended up crashing the party. After that, shenanigans ensued.
Wildchild saw his ex-girlfriend Aurora who is now dating Daken. He couldn’t stand to see it and the fact that Daken was being a condescending jerk didn’t help. Thankfully, Greycrow stepped in before the two could fight. Their confrontation ultimately ended with Magneto stopping the scuffle but this set off a chain reaction of events.
Nanny broke a glass and went right after him looking for blood. When Polaris asked Havoc if he should stop the fight, he declined. Polaris looked shocked at how nonchalant he was about what was happening. It’s clear that Havoc is slowly becoming as heartless as the rest of his teammates. Meanwhile, John Greycrow is learning to care.
Hellfire moments:
- A drunk Nightcrawler during Hellions is always funny. He must have a lot on his mind after becoming “friends” with Legion.
- Ben Grimm rolling dice in Marauders was great. He seems like someone you’d always want at a party.
- Dr. Doom laughing at Emma Frost after the Shi’ar declared mutants rulers of Earth was great, especially after her saying mutants weren’t trying to take over the world. Even Doom knew this was funny.
- Nanny running at Mr. Sinister with a broken glass yelling, “Judgement Day, mother *******” is a moment that will live rent free in the heads of everyone who reads Hellions No. 12.
- What are the logic crystals that the Shi’ar brought and why doesn’t Emma Frost know about them?
