Jonathan Kent has experienced a lot of emotions on Superman and Lois but where will that take him throughout the rest of the season?
Jonathan Kent has had an interesting ride during Superman and Lois’ freshman season. Unlike his DC Comics counterpart, Jon does not have powers like his father. That honor was given to his twin brother, Jordan who is still very much struggling with this new challenge as he continues to deal with his anxiety.
While Jordan’s nickname is Superboy, courtesy of his brother, we need to ask ourselves where Jonathan could end up at the end of the season as it dives into its second half. That’s why we’ve done a load of theorizing and we think we’ve got a few good ideas as to where his story could go.
On that note, let’s take a look at whether Jon is destined for super powers, how the events in Smallville will impact his relationships and how this whole season will affect his outlook for season 2. So, be sure to grab your popcorn and your favourite Superman merch because we’re about to dig in to the Arrowverse show deep.
Will Jonathan Kent get powers on Superman and Lois?
Jonathan hasn’t got any powers yet but will he end up with them to some degree? Part of us says yes, but the other part says no. Though, the third, almost non-existent edge of this puzzle remains in the neutral zone. Let’s explore a few of these ideas, shall we?

So, let’s pretend we’re at the season 1 finale and it ends with a resounding no, Jonathan doesn’t end up with powers. This could prompt him to develop a closer bond with Lois as she doesn’t have any either. We saw them distance themselves last episode after she exploded at him after he almost died in John Henry Irons’ RV.
Though, after his mother revealed the reason she screamed at him, he immediately forgave her. As mentioned in our review of ‘Holding the Wrench’, Jon mourns the sister he never knew so the reaction he has to what Lois reveals to him is authentic. Not only this, it gives us a bit of room to speculate where his character arc goes from here if he doesn’t end up with a power set.
Going over to the yes category and we think that there are a few possibilities we wanted to explore. What if he ends with partial powers? As Jonathan may only be half-Kryptonian (like Jordan), he might only get some powers – and we’re not talking about the dangerous ones. Jordan appears to have those. No, what if Jon has the super speed and the x-ray vision?
On the other hand, what if he gains a full power set like Clark (and Kara)? That might be a relief to Jordan to see that he doesn’t have to go through his new situation alone.
How will his relationships be affected?
Now, we touched on this earlier but the relationship Jonathan has with Lois will likely be strengthened after the latest episode, with the pair likely becoming much closer in the coming episodes. On the other hand, however, his friendship with Sarah Cushing might lead to conflict with Jordan given the latter’s very obvious crush on their friend.
Also, if Jonathan does end up with powers, it might lead his relationship with his grandfather, Sam Lane, to take an interesting turn. General Lane knows that Clark is Superman. So, what if Jon develops the same thought process and beliefs when it comes to other Kryptonians? This would like to put a wrench in the works with Clark and Lois as they hate it when the general takes back his word.
Jonathan has been slightly envious of Jordan for getting powers. While he says he doesn’t really care now, something tells us that he actually does want what his twin brother has – or at the very least, he’s feeling a little left out because he doesn’t have powers too. After all, he’s lost a lot since their move to Smallville. His girlfriend Eliza dumped him, he hasn’t made any friends outside of Sarah, he’s been usurped as a football player by his own brother, and then he almost got himself killed (inside what Lois so rightly called a “murder van”.
If Jordan’s powers continue to evolve, Jonathan’s jealousy might just show itself again.
How will his views change?
How will Jonathan’s views have changed by the end of the season? He was happier in Metropolis, with friends, a girlfriend and promising football career. Now, he has lost of all that and constantly finds himself feeling helpless because his brother has gained everything that he lost (and so much more) when they moved to Smallville.
How will this change Jonathan when the season concludes. We have to say the odds of an extreme reaction may be pretty high. Given everything that has been happening recently, it’s only natural that his perspective will change on a lot of things. But will his envy of his brother be a catalyst for a positive evolution or will it leave him feeling more isolated?
