The death of Doctor Strange starts in the fall of 2021, but what does this actually mean?

Doctor Strange is looked at as the premier sorcerer and keeper of magic in the history of comic books. People may love DC’s John Constantine, but Marvel’s Stephen Strange is a name you can trust. He’s helped keep mystical beings and abusers of magic from destroying his reality for years. Even when he wasn’t Sorcerer Supreme, he was still a force to be reckoned with. There was even a brief time where there was no magic and Doctor Strange still found a way to recreate the lost spells.

But even with all of this, it looks like Stephen Strange isn’t exempt from death. Marvel Comics has announced the Death of Doctor Strange starting in September.

So far, all we have to go on is a title. Marvel Comics loves dropping teasers. As frustrating as it is, it’s a brilliant move. Marvel will release a teaser title to get people excited for what’s next, then hit you with what’s going on. The same thing happened recently with the Trial of Magneto. There may not be a lot to go on, but we do know that this is a major event.

Is Doctor Strange going to die in Marvel Comics?

Doctor Strange is the keeper of the balance of magic in this realm – a job that’s among the most important. There are beings in this realm and others that can’t wait to use Earth as their playground. Knowing Doctor Strange, however, he will probably have foreseen his apparent death coming.

In an issue of Strange Academy, Stephen hinted that there’s a reason that he’s training this new generation of magic users. He said something dark is coming. Perhaps he is preparing the students and the others for his demise. Someone will have to defend Earth after he’s gone and, as we’ve seen, sometimes it takes more than one great wielder of magic to get the job done.

There’s also a chance that death won’t mean Stephen Strange is actually gone. Doctor Strange is the master of the mystical arts. His physical form is just part of him so he could be around in a spiritual form. It may leave him more vulnerable and prevent him from helping like he normally would, but he’d still be around for council.

How does this affect the Marvel Cinematic Universe?

We know that the events of the comic books sometimes impact their movie adaptations. Could these events have a major impact on the Marvel Cinematic Universe? What if Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness sees the Scarlet Witch kill Stephen Strange? Or what if she succeeds him as the Sorcerer Supreme if he is killed by the movie’s main villain? The character’s death in the movies would be an ending that no one would see coming. And, when it’s eventually time to bring Stephen back in the comic books, perhaps he could return in the MCU as well.

No matter how you look at this, Doctor Strange’s apparent death will be important to Marvel Comics. We all know that he will be back eventually. What we don’t know is how he’ll die and how long he’ll be away for.
