Superman and Lois’ latest episode once again left viewers with their mouths ajar, but what does it all mean?

Superman and Lois has been about a war on two fronts. While the Man of Steel has been fighting the supernatural threats of Smallville (and the world), Lois Lane has been battling the more grounded threats under their noses. What they (or us) didn’t realize is that both of those threats went hand-in-hand.

The arrival of John Henry Irons confirmed that there are unnatural events taking place in Smallville and, though his attempts to destroy Superman were misguided, the points he raised were chillingly accurate. For now, an army of potentially evil Kryptonians look to make Smallville their home. And the person responsible for their arrival is none other than Morgan Edge.

However, it seems that Morgan Edge (Adam Rayner) has been hiding a lot more than those Kryptonians.

Does Superman have a brother?

When the Man of Steel was summoned by Morgan Edge, the pair confronted each other far away from Smallville. But the setting wasn’t the most striking thing about this situation (visually stunning as it was). No, Morgan Edge was wearing a new costume – one not entirely unlike Clark’s “The Blur” outfit from Season 9 of Smallville. He also flew towards Superman, revealed that he was Kryptonian and claimed that he was actually Kal-El’s brother. And with that, fans wondered if we were actually looking at the Man of Steel’s evil sibling.

Though certain stories have added to the narratives so that characters like Kon-El and Mon-El are considered Supes’ brother, Superman doesn’t definitively have a brother in the comic book canon.

So, is there a scorned Kryptonian brother we didn’t know about before in Superman and Lois, or is this actually someone far more sinister?

Is Morgan Edge really Zod on Superman and Lois?

While “brother” could refer to the fact that Morgan Edge and Kal-El are siblings, there’s also a strong possibility that it’s just a term of endearment used between Kryptonians (like, say, “friend”). And if that is the case, then which famous Kryptonian is Edge?

More from Arrowverse

Well, it could, in fact, be General Zod. Remember, on Smallville (season 9 too, coincidentally), a young Major Zod occasionally referred to Kal-El as his brother because they were two of the only Kryptonians on planet Earth. And he too liked to lead people like the future general he was destined to become.

With that in mind, could Edge actually be Zod in disguise? After all, he too is building an army of rogue Kryptonians that he wishes to lead.

The hole in that theory is that Supergirl  made clear that Zod was Superman’s archenemy. Aside from the fact that he was played by a different actor in that apperance, it confirmed that he and Superman already crossed paths. But then again, considering we’re talking about a character whose Supergirl history has already been retconned in Edge, it seems that Crisis On Infinite Earths is a great way of rewriting events that already happened on the parent show (and elsewhere in the Arrowverse).

So, yes, theoretically Edge could be Zod. The question is: Is he?

dark. Next. Is Superman and Lois set in the Arrowverse?
