Is Superman Returns bad?

This is going to seem so contradictory but I actually really enjoyed Superman Returns. Not only that, but I think Brandon Routh was an excellent Clark Kent/Superman.

However, just because a movie is good, that doesn’t mean you should watch it and here’s why.

When it comes to Superman movies, there are a lot. And after a while, it gets frustrating to see a new Superman all the time. At this point, we have the DCEU Superman and the DC TV Superman, and that doesn’t even take into account all the different Earths and their Supermen.

And I think if you enjoy the DCEU and Man of Steel and then go back and watch Superman Returns it is actually really depressing because this could have been the start of something amazing. Not only did Routh remind us of the OG Superman, Christopher Reeve, but there was a lightness to the movie that isn’t often seen in some of the newer DC properties.

Maybe it is the fact that we can look back and see the promise of this movie and Routh’s portrayal, but doing a rewatch is sadder than anything else because we see what could have been. Is this movie worth watching? Sure. But if you do, just know that we are unlikely to see anything like it again (at least not anytime soon).

There are a number of Supermen out there now, but thanks to Brandon Routh we know what he could have been and that’s why this is a movie I never recommend. (I told you this was going to be some weird reasoning.)
