Doctor Who could be about to introduce a new lead but is Olly Alexander playing the fourteenth Doctor and replacing Jodie Whittaker?

Doctor Who could be set for another change of face. The long-running British sci-fi/fantasy TV drama has been a staple of television for decades (with its revival running for the past 15 years) and it’s known for changing its lead every so often as the Doctor regenerates into another actor.

Now, reports suggest that another regeneration is upon the show, with Years and Years singer/actor Olly Alexander set to take over.

But is there any truth to these rumors? Here’s what we know.

Who is Olly Alexander and is he playing the new Doctor Who?

The Sun is reporting that Olly Alexander is set to play the fourteenth Doctor Who. However, Alexander’s manager Martha Kinn has since shot down the rumors, confirming that he’s more focused on releasing music “for now.”

Alexander is a musician, singer-songwriter, actor and LGBTQ advocate. The frontman of Years and Years, he has released hit songs such as “King”, “Shine” and “If You’re Over Me”.

He has also been acting for many years, with roles in Gulliver’s TravelsSkins and Penny Dreadful. However his latest role, in Russel T. Davis’ critically-acclaimed It’s A Sin, earned him universal acclaim.

If he does play the role, he would be the first gay actor to play the Doctor – something that would undoubtedly be a huge step forward in terms of representation.

Is Jodie Whittaker leaving Doctor Who?

Jodie Whittaker is the current Doctor, becoming the thirteenth actor to play the role overall (and the fifth since the revival series began). She has been in the role since 2017 – when she made history by being the first female Doctor.

However, recent reports suggested that she might be leaving the show after the 13th season of the revived series. Those reports first made their way online over five months ago and they have not been officially confirmed, with the BBC refusing to comment on speculation surrounding the future of the show.
