Best comic book movie moments: 2. Why so serious?

Comic book movie: Dark Knight

This is where Joker goes from slick planner to downright scary. He fakes his death, pops up, and puts a knife in the mouth of the man (Gambol) who put a hit on him. There was nothing Gambol could do. Then, Joker gets into a story about how he got the scars on his face. He says his father did it to put a smile on his face. The tale ends with Joker asking, “Why so serious?” and killing Gambol.

The story will remain iconic. The tale he tells is false, but that didn’t make it any less horrifying. Him saying, “Why so serious” and “Let’s put a smile on that face” is still just as good over a decade later. It’s also a horrifying thought that this is how Joker got his scars. Heath Ledger made the Joker terrifying. To this day, he’s looked at as the best Joker. A lot of it has to do with this scene.

Best comic book movie moments: 1. I’m Batman

Comic book movie: Batman (1989)

When a movie is debuting, a precedent has to be set. It lets the audience know what they’re getting into. Time Burton and Michael Keaton did just that. After Batman takes care of two criminals, he sends a message. Batman tells the crook that he’s to tell all his friends about him. The crook asks who he is. Batman aggressively pulls him close and says, “I’m Batman”

To many, Michael Keaton is the premier Batman. He’s the reason that the Dark Knight isn’t running around with bombs over his head. This is when that begins. It isn’t just the beginning of a new era of Batman films. Those two words (I’m Batman) are a large part of why Batman is popular. It’s gone from a catchphrase to striking fear in comic books as well. It’s the most iconic moment and phrase in comic book movie history.
