Phoenix Song: Marvel’s new Phoenix to headline her own adventure this fall
By Marc Griffin
Marvel’s Echo will be the next hero endowed with the power of the Phoenix Force this October as she embarks on an adventure in her very first series called Phoenix Song: Echo.
As per Marvel, the Phoenix Force will find a brand new user in the hero known as Echo. Marvel announced on June 30th that, beginning this fall, Maya Lopez Echo would be getting a bit of a cosmic upgrade as she is endowed with the essence of the iconic Phoenix Force.
With the new fiery cosmic upgrade in the Phoenix Force, Echo will be receiving her very own series titled Phoenix Song: Echo that picks up from the ending of Jason Aaron’s Avengers storyline titled “Enter the Phoenix.”
Echo rises in Marvel’s Phoenix Song
Phoenix Song: Echo is written by Hugo Award-winning artist Rebecca Roanhorse, who also wrote Echo’s story in Marvel’s Voices: Indigenous Voices #1, and critically acclaimed artist Luca Maresca, who is notable for his work on the Avengers, the new series looks to explore Echo and the connections the Phoenix Force has to the Cheyenne hero’s past. As the press release states:
"The exhilarating story will be packed with revelations about both Echo’s ancestry and the Phoenix Force mythos, as well as the debut of new heroes and the shocking return of an iconic X-Men villain. Echo is now the host of one of the most powerful entities in the Marvel Universe, and she has burning questions that demand answers. Still learning her new cosmic abilities—and struggling with the Phoenix’s overwhelming personality—Echo strikes out to return to her roots. But the reservation has even fewer answers. And where power goes, evil follows."
“Iconic X-Men villain?” You say? This hints at the reintroduction of a adversary of the mutants that we haven’t seen in a long time, but that could be several characters. Judging from the fact that Echo will have to “unleash a power only the greatest heroes in history have been able to control” it seems that whoever this iconic villain is will be one of great power. Roanhorse builds upon this anticipation and offers a bit of what to expect:
"“I am excited to return to Echo in her first solo series and follow this thrilling new direction Jason Aaron has taken her. Readers will see some old favorites reimagined, and some entirely new characters as Echo comes to terms with the incredible and dangerous powers of the Phoenix.”"
Its also worth noting that, as Roanhorse stated, Phoenix Song: Echo will introduce brand new characters to the X-Men mythos as Echo learns to navigate her newly-acquired abilities. Whether these characters will be helping our mononymously-named hero or plotting against her, we don’t know. But what we do know is that this story is sure to have some lasting effects upon the Marvel Comics universe, especially within the mutant’s corner of the universe.
Phoenix Song: Echo is set for a release date of October 6th.
