The League of Lokis

Hopefully those who were shocked by Loki getting pruned by Renslayer (and those very upset by Mobius getting pruned as well) stuck around long enough to keep watching through the credits. Because we got one doozy of a mid-credit stinger. Not only did Loki somehow survive, he’s greeted by four other Loki variants in what appears to be a post-apocalyptic New York City. And what was really great about that final shot is that all those Loki variants are in and of themselves comic book-related Easter Eggs.

The one credited as “Boastful Loki” (Deobia Oparei) appears to come from a reality in which the God of Mischief proved himself worthy of wielding Mjolnir instead of Thor. This has happened quite a few times in the pages of Marvel, most notably Axis (in which various heroes and villains had their moral compasses inverted so that good became evil and evil became good) and Infinity Wars (in which another alternate version of Loki not only held Mjolnir but also possessed the Infinity Stones).

“Kid Loki” (Jack Veal) was the next incarnation of Loki after Lady Loki died during the events of the crossover, Siege. This version first showed up in Paris as a young hustler with no memory of his time as an adult. Thus, this version, while still a trickster, became a much more heroic iteration than his previous self, even joining the Young Avengers and having his own series entitled Journey into Mystery.

The “Alligator Loki” could be a sly wink towards a classic Walter Simonson Thor story in which the God of Thunder was transformed into a frog, thanks to another one of Loki’s dastardly schemes. As a frog, Thor teamed up with another human cursed into a frog nicknamed Puddlegulp who would later be granted his own version of Mjlonir and become “Throg.” And if you think that’s weird, Thor and Puddlegulp also teamed up with alligators from the New York sewers to save a secret kingdom of frog from an army of rats.

And finally, there’s “Classic Loki” (Richard E. Grant) who is none other than Loki dressed his original costume from the comic books. What would really be interesting is if this Loki was also the original Loki from the comics before all the changes that took place to the character to have him better reflect the version from the MCU. That would really give a whole new dimension towards an upcoming cinematic multiverse.

However, one Loki who is unaccounted for is the “President Loki” that we saw from the original trailer. Perhaps the god of mischief will encounter this other version of himself in the second to last episode.
