Natasha Romanoff isn’t the only Black Widow

Natasha Romanoff is the only Black Widow moviegoers know, so it may come as a surprise that she’s not the only character to take up that mantle in the comics. There are a few alternate universe versions of the character scattered throughout the various series, something the MCU could build upon if it decides to explore Marvel’s Multiverse (which all signs point to it doing).

Among the alternate-universe characters to go by the name Black Widow are Monica Chang from Ultimate Comics: Avengers #3, Jessica Drew from the Spider-Woman comics, Dottie Underwood (who actually appeared in Marvel’s Agent Carter), and Tania, who becomes the futuristic Black Widow 2099.

Within the same universe as Natasha, the only other character to take up the mantle of Black Widow is Yelena Belova. She’s probably the best-known Black Widow after Natasha, and she’s introduced to the MCU in Black Widow. Like Natasha, Yelena was raised in the Red Room, and she’s one of the only people there who matched Natasha’s fighting skills. Unlike Natasha, it takes Yelena more time to escape her traumatic past, something Black Widow homes in on.

With Yelena joining the MCU, it appears she’ll be taking up the Black Widow mantle in the movies as well, so fans can expect to see more of her moving forward. In fact, it’s already been confirmed that she makes an appearance in Marvel’s Hawkeye. Whether she’ll become a long-term member of the Avengers team remains to be seen, but things do look promising on that front.
