Black Widow is finally upon us but will Natasha Romanoff be returning to the MCU for a sequel in the future?

Black Widow is the first Marvel Cinematic Universe movie in two years. Originally intended for release in May 2020, it was delayed multiple times after the outbreak of the novel coronavirus. But realizing that MCU fans would crave some summer action, Marvel Studios settled on a July 2021 release date, deciding to also release it on Disney Plus Premier Access for fans who preferred to watch it at home.

The much-anticipated action adventure sees Scarlett Johansson reprise her role as Natasha Romanoff in a new story that tells her character’s backstory for the first time. It also features Florence Pugh, David Harbour, O-T Fagbenle, William Hurt, Ray Winstone, Rachel Weisz, and Olga Kurylenko in primary roles.

The film has received positive reviews from fans and critics, with many calling for Natasha Romanoff to return to the MCU in the future. But will Black Widow get a sequel?

Is Black Widow 2 happening?

It’s unknown at this time if Black Widow 2 will go ahead. While the film’s inevitable success could be a factor in that decision, the creative team are somewhat limited in the story they can tell considering the titular character’s fate in Avengers: Endgame.

Scarlett Johansson has seemingly confirmed that Black Widow is her final appearance in the MCU as Natasha Romanoff but that doesn’t mean there won’t be a sequel to the movie. It just might follow somebody else from the Red Room saga instead.

Director Cate Shortland spoke to RadioTimes and revealed that there could be a sequel that focuses on one of the other characters. As far as who that character could be, the likely option is Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova – the MCU’s next Black Widow.

However, when asked by Deadline if there was any chance of a sequel, Shortland commented:

"“I think these girls have got a lot of asses still to kick.”"

If Johansson were to return, there could be potential for a second Black Widow movie set during the character’s five-year journey between Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame.
