Loki bowed out with a season finale that boasts major implications for the Marvel Cinematic Universe going forward. But could the God of Mischief return earlier than expected? Spoilers below.

Loki has gripped viewers for weeks now. Disney Plus‘ newest fragment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has reintroduced us to a new version of the God of Mischief, bringing Tom Hiddleston back to the forefront of the MCU as this Loki variant took on the organization known as the Time Variance Authority.

Over the course of the show’s run, Loki, Sylvie and eventually Mobius M. Mobius have battled the TVA’s attempt to write reality as they wish it to go and that inevitably brought them to The Void – a place at the end of time that secretly hid the person responsible for controlling it. In the finale, however, the two variants finally came face-to-face with that person: Kang the Conqueror. Or an early version of him at least.

In the end, however, Sylvie killed the TVA’s creator, resulting in the timeline – and, by extension, the TVA – descending into chaos, setting the stage for a multiverse of madness to explore in the show’s now-confirmed second season. However, it also sets the stage for another chapter of the MCU – one that Loki could very well end up appearing in.

Will Loki return in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness?

Sylvie’s actions have resulted in the creation of multiverse. That right there is cause enough to believe that the events of the season finale of Loki will play into the upcoming Doctor Strange sequel because it is, after all, called Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

More from Disney Plus

To make matters more intriguing, The Hollywood Reporter suggests that Tom Hiddleston is expected to reprise his role as the MCU’s God of Mischief in that movie (which also stars WandaVision‘s Emmy-nominated Elizabeth Olsen). Granted, the publication states that Marvel have yet to confirm said rumors, but it’s still a major possibility after the results of the Loki season 1 finale.

But it isn’t just the trickster himself who could be involved in the future of the MCU after that finale. We know that Jonathan Majors will appear as Kang the Conqueror in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. It will presumably be another version of him – one of the variants that Kang was talking about – but the character’s involvement makes the movie even more important, especially knowing what we know now.

And with Spider-Man: No Way Home expected to explore the multiverse in its own way, don’t be surprised if any of the aforementioned characters play a role in it too. We know Benedict Cumberbatch will be appearing as Stephen Strange so that alone is enough to suggest that the impact of Loki‘s multiverse-creation will be felt in that movie… and perhaps so many more in Phase Four and beyond.
