DC’s Legends of Tomorrow will return for a seventh season later this year but one longtime Legend will not be a part of the show.

The end is nigh for John Constantine’s time on DC’s Legends of Tomorrow. The beloved demon hunter has been a staple of the show since he first made his presence felt during its third season in his second Arrowverse appearance (after his debut on Arrow two years prior).

A longtime fan-favorite since his own short-lived Constantine series on NBC, Matt Ryan been a series regular from seasons 4 through 6, but fear not – that will not be changing. Yes, even though John Constantine’s arc is coming to an end in the back half of season 6, Ryan will return next season as a series regular, portraying a brand new character.

Why John Constantine is leaving DC’s Legends of Tomorrow

During the show’s Comic-Con @ Home panel, it was revealed that John Constantine’s arc would be coming to an end and that Matt Ryan would remain on in his series regular role as a different character. That different character is Dr. Gwyn Davies, an eccentric scientist from the early 20th century who is described as potentially being the team’s only hope in season 7.

As for why Constantine is leaving, well that reportedly has nothing to do with Legends. According to Deadline, the character is being phased out because of the new Constantine series from J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot and Warner Bros. TV that is in the works for HBO Max.

This is undoubtedly disappointing news because both properties can actually coexist since they are not in the same universe and Matt Ryan has become the definitive portrayal of the character.

While Ryan has not been on the show since the beginning, Constantine is one of its longest-serving Legends. The fact that his departure comes after the exits of two originals in both Brandon Routh’s Ray Palmer last year and Dominic Purcell’s impending full-time exit as Mick Rory this year is quite the blow for fans. That said, it’s good to know that the beloved Constantine star will remain on Legends in a different capacity.
