A familiar face from Fox’s Gotham will be reprising their role as Renee Montoya in the Arrowverse’s Batwoman.

It looks like a familiar face will be returning to Gotham City – albeit a very different one. As revealed by Deadline, Renee Montoya will arrive on-screens when Batwoman season 3 kicks off in a few months. Not only that but that character will once again be portrayed by Victoria Cartagena.

Yes, Cartagena previously played the notable detective from the GCPD on Fox’s Gotham and she will be reprising her role here, but she’ll be playing a different version of the character.

Renee Montoya finally makes her Arrowverse debut in Batwoman season 3

Before the freshman season of Batwoman aired in 2019, the character of Montoya initially was not permitted for use due to the fact that she was appearing in Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) at the time in her first big-screen appearance – in which she was portrayed by Rosie Perez.

More from Arrowverse

Fans have long wondered if the character would feature in the Arrowverse, with rumors starting as far back as Supergirl‘s second season. While Birds of Prey prevented her initial introduction on Batwoman, it’s so great that she will finally get the chance to debut now and it’s even greater that she’ll be portrayed by Cartagena when she joins Javicia Leslie, Rachel Skarsten, Meagan Tandy, Nicole Kang and Camrus Johnson on the third season of the show.

Montoya was created by Bruce Timm, Paul Dini and Mitch Brian for Batman: The Animated Series; she has since become a supporting character in DC Comics following her transition to the page starting from Batman No. 475.

She notably has a relationship with Kate Kane/Batwoman within the comics. Wallis Day, who replaced Ruby Rose as Kane left Gotham in search of her cousin Bruce Wayne.

Outside of her live-action appearances, the character was voiced by Ingrid Oliu, Liane Schirmer and Vanessa Marshall in Batman: The Animated Series, The New Batman Adventures and animated film Batman: Bad Blood respectively.
