Here is everything you need to know about the release date for the upcoming The Batman, along with the cast, synopsis, trailer, and much more.

It’s been way too long since the Dark Knight got his own solo endeavor, and fans of Gotham’s caped crusader are more than eager for another exceptional cinematic experience. The next big-screen endeavor for the DC legend will be The Batman, and it’s no surprise many people would like to know as much as they can about this intriguing take on the beloved character.

At one point, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice’s Ben Affleck was set to write direct and star in a solo Batman film connected to the now-defunct dark and gritty Snyderverse, but then things changed when War for the Planet Of The Apes director Matt Reeves stepped in to take over introducing a Hitchcockian approach to a story with Batman that exists outside the DCEU, set in Earth-2 of the franchise’s ever-expanding multiverse.

The Batman would see Tenet’s Robert Pattinson take on the role of the Caped Crusader playing a version of the character that is much younger than most portrayals, covering his second year fighting crime against the scum of Gotham. The production kicked off in January 2020 before suffering delays because of COVID-19 and finally wrapping on March 13, 2021.

There has been an ample amount of hype surrounding the ambitious DC flick, and there are always high expectations from fans when it comes to a movie featuring Bruce Wayne’s crime-fighting alter ego. Below, fans will find out everything they should know about The Batman before it arrives.

The Batman release date

The original theatrical debut for The Batman was scheduled for June 25, 2021, before being pushed back to October 1, 2021. It was then revealed in October 2020 that the film would be pushed back yet again to March 4, 2020.

The Batman cast

Pattinson will follow in the footsteps of Adam West, Val Kilmer, Michael Keaton, Ben Affleck, George Clooney, and Christian Bale by becoming the next big-screen live-action caped crusader, which is no easy endeavor. Each individual who has suited up and put on the cowl has had very different experiences, some being rather good and others not so much. It will be interesting to see how the Twilight-turned indie star fares as the titular player in The Batman.

Also in the mix is Zoe Kravitz, who will be playing Catwoman, and there is also Colin Farrell, who looks almost unrecognizable as the Penguin.

Several other big names are involved, and the characters they are playing will definitely get fans even more excited to see The Batman when it comes out.

Here is the cast of The Batman film:

  • Robert Pattinson – Bruce Wayne, Batman
  • Zoe Kravitz – Selina Kyle, Catwoman
  • Paul Dano – Edward Nashton, The Riddler
  • Colin Farrell – Oswald Cobblepot, The Penguin
  • Jeffrey Wright – James Gordon
  • Andy Serkis – Alfred Pennyworth
  • Peter Sarsgaard – District Attorney Gil Colson
  • John Turturro – Carmine Falcone
  • Barry Keoghan – Officer Stanley Merkel

The Batman trailer

Fans are anxiously waiting for the first full-length trailer for the highly anticipated DC movie. But for now, we have the teaser that was released at DC FanDome on August 22, 2020. Despite being a short preview, it definitely indicates this will be a much different take on the iconic character.

What is The Batman about?

There is no official synopsis for The Batman right now, and the full plot details are likely to be revealed much closer to the release date. However, according to Reeves in an interview with New Trailer Buzz on June 27, 2017, the movie will see the Caped Crusader in a much more grounded adventure revolving around the hero’s detective skills (which is quite unlike his last outings that involved aliens and end-of-the-world scenarios).

"“I think there’s a chance to do an almost noir-driven, detective version of Batman that is point of view driven in a very, very powerful way that is hopefully going to connect you to what’s going inside of his head, and inside of his heart.”"

Thankfully the director wasn’t interested in giving fans another installment of the very overplayed origin story of the Dark Knight and clarified his intentions for the story in an interview with the Nerdist. So instead of getting a fully formed superhero, as mentioned before, we will get a rookie Batman in his sophomore year of crime-fighting.

"“I wanted to do not an origin tale, but a tale that would still acknowledge his origins, in that it formed who he is. Like this guy, he’s majorly struggling, and this is how he’s trying to rise above that struggle. But that doesn’t mean that he even fully understands, you know. It’s that whole idea of the shadow self and what’s driving you, and how much of that you can incorporate, and how much of it you’re doing that you’re unaware of.”"

What is known about the story is that it involves the Riddler playing a deadly game of cat and mouse with Commissioner Gordon and the Caped Crusader, resulting in a tense slow-burn thriller. Several other members of Gotham’s underworld are also involved in Batman’s investigation, including Catwoman, Oswald Cobblepot and Carmine Falcone.

One other thing that Reeves has confirmed is that The Batman will feature an all-new Batmobile – one that is very different from previous designs. And we saw our first in-action glimpse of it in the teaser trailer.
