What If…? episode 1 ending explained: What [SPOILER] really means for the MCU
Marvel’s What If…? premiered and it left fans asking some pretty interesting questions. But what does it all mean for the MCU’s multiverse?
Marvel’s What If…? has arrived. The nine-part animated series kicked off on Disney Plus with an incredible trip into a past that didn’t happen as Peggy Carter found herself taking Steve Rogers’ place as Captain Carter was born.
That episode essentially retold the events of Captain America: The First Avenger but the conclusion still left viewers with some questions. With that in mind, let’s explore what it means for the show and Captain Carter going forward.
Is Captain Carter set to join the Avengers in What If…?
The premiere of What If…? saw Peggy Carter take Steve Rogers’ place in this universe, becoming Captain Carter and taking the fight to Hydra (with the help of The First Avengers regulars Bucky Barnes, Howard Stark, Dum Dum Dugan and, of course, Steve Rogers himself as the first ever Iron Man in the Hydra-Stomper).

In the end, the Red Skull opened an interdimensional portal and attempted to bring a giant octopus into their own world… until it killed him and nearly enveloped the whole room. Peggy and the crew were able to send it back to where it came from, but not without Peggy disappearing into the portal with it – where she was met by Nick Fury and Clint Barton in the present day.
A unique retelling of the events of Captain America: The First Avenger, it looks like Peggy is set to join this universe’s version of The Avengers, creating another offshoot version of the heroes we know in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We know that Captain Carter is returning in season 2 of What If…? so be prepared to see some modern day heroics from this earth’s First Avenger.
What If…? releases new episodes on Disney+ each Wednesday at 12:01 a.m. PT. and 3:01 a.m. ET.
