Titans season 3 revealed that a major Batman character died off-screen but when and how did it happen? *Spoilers ahead*

Titans season 3 premiered on HBO Max this week, bringing the very first series of the DC Universe era to its new home.

A season that is focused on both the arrival of a new vigilante in Gotham City known as the Red Hood and the return of Starfire’s sister Blackfire, it premiered on Warner Bros.’ streaming service this week with its first three episodes.

However, it also featured an off-screen death that undoubtedly left fans scratching their heads.

Is Alfred Pennyworth dead on Titans season 3?

According to Titans season 3, Alfred Pennyworth is dead. The shocking announcement was made when Dick Grayson returned from San Francisco after the death of Jason Todd.

Upon seeing Bruce Wayne’s rather reserved behavior after the death in their Bat-Family, Dick brought up Alfred, revealing to us that he behaved similarly when his father figure and loyal butler passed away.

How and when did Alfred die in Titans?

It’s not yet known how Alfred died. The fact that Titans is set well into Batman’s tenure as Gotham’s hero could have easily explained this before, but the thing that caught fans off-guard was that Alfred was alive as recently as the show’s second season.

Fans have wondered how the show would explain Alfred’s absences at Wayne Manor during season 2 after the first season established that he was indeed still a presence in Dick’s life, but the second season simply doubled down on his existence as Bruce revealed that his longtime friend was the one who told him that the former Robin had called in the premiere.

Assuming Alfred was still alive by the end of the season, which it seems that he was as it was never referred to during the season and we now know that Dick and Barbara Gordon were present for his funeral, so that puts his death sometime between seasons 2 and 3.

You would think that, if that’s the case, the wound would still be fresh since it hasn’t been that long between seasons, but Dick and Barbara refer to is as though it happened quite some time ago, making it hard to know exactly how long ago it happened.
