Spider-Man: No Way Home – Every Easter Egg you probably missed in the teaser trailer
By Mike McNulty
A black Spider-Man costume?
In a one brief scene, we see what looks like Peter in some sort of cafeteria while in costume. Only he’s not wearing just any costume; he’s in a black costume. Now before some of you get all excited, this is not the black symbiote costume. Rather, it’s another new costume which just so happens to be black with what also looks to be gold web-patterns. Officially called “the Black and Gold Suit,” it was first revealed as a promotional action figure from Hot Toys. And as Peter appears to be running with cafeteria workers pointing which way to go, he is clearly running away from someone.
This isn’t the only Spider-Man costume Peter is wearing, of course. In addition to the one he created during Spider-Man: Far From Home, he also dons the Iron Spider suit given to him by Tony Stark which he wore during Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame.
As for what the new suit actually does, the Hot Toys figure shows some detailed circuitry patterns and suggests that it may allow Peter to cast what looks like magic. So perhaps it incorporates some of Doctor Strange’s knowledge of the Mystic Arts. You can also just make out Spider-Man in the costume in another shot dodging what looks like a lightning bolt. Looks like Peter made himself the suit designed to go up against certain number of villains. We also know that, based on other action figures and Funko Pops, that Spidey could be wearing two additional costumes at some point during the movie.
Doctor Strange
As for the Master of the Mystic Arts, the trailer does showcase him a lot, which is funny for two reasons. Not only are Tom Holland and Benedict Cumberbatch British, but both Spider-Man and Doctor Stephen Strange were co-creations of Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. Not surprising then that both characters frequently teamed-up in the comics.
You will note that when we first see Strange in the trailer, he’s wearing winter clothing along with his signature Cloak of Levitation. One of these garments includes a Columbia University sweatshirt, which is Strange’s alma mater. He’s also drinking from an “Oh, for Fox Sake!” coffee mug. Considering how Disney and Marvel Studios did purchase 20th Century Fox in 2019 – along with the film rights to Fantastic Four and the X-Men – this does come across, more or less, as a gentle jab.
In addition, we also see a lot of Strange’s magic on display, in shots that look very much as though they come from the first Doctor Strange (2016) movie. Given how we see New York City folding and collapsing in on itself, the changing of a building’s architecture, and replicating subway cars, it appears Spidey is being pursued by Strange through the mirror dimension. Also, it seems Strange learned from the Ancient One how to punch a person’s astral self out of one’s body, as he does to Spider-Man in this trailer. Obviously, there’s going to be a huge difference of opinion between them that comes about.
