Spider-Man: No Way Home – Every Easter Egg you probably missed in the teaser trailer
By Mike McNulty
George Washington Bridge
Here’s an Easter Egg for those of you who are big-time Spider-Man nerds. Several shots from the teaser trailer show Spidey on the offramp to the George Washington Bridge. This is a rather infamous New York City landmark in the annals of comics, as this was supposedly the same bridge in which one of Spider-Man’s more notable girlfriends, Gwen Stacy, met her tragic death at the hands of the Green Goblin in “The Night Gwen Stacy Died” (Amazing Spider-Man #121). Or did she?
See, even though Spidey’s word balloons stated that the Goblin took Gwen to the George Washington Bridge, the actual panels showed Spidey swinging towards the Brooklyn Bridge. And before you say, “Well, maybe he was just swinging on his way to one bridge while passing by another,” the Green Goblin is holding an unconscious Gwen captive and waiting for Spidey on the Brooklyn Bridge. So either writer Gerry Conway meant the Brooklyn Bridge and the letterer made a mistake, or artist Gil Kane illustrated the wrong suspension bridge.
Subsequent reprintings of the story corrected the mistake, but the mix-up between the George Washington Bridge and the Brooklyn Bridge has always been a bit of an inside joke among the wall-crawler’s fanbase. It’s also somewhat fitting given the significance of the final shots in this teaser trailer.
The Sinister Six
And now we get to the real reason folks are talking about this teaser, and one of the biggest not-so-secret secrets about the movie itself. The second-to-last shot reveals none other than Alfred Molina reprising his role as Doctor Octopus from Spider-Man 2 (2002).
But there’s plenty of indications that Doc Ock isn’t alone. We see one of the Green Goblin’s pumpkin bombs, officially confirming Willem Defoe’s Green Goblin from Spider-Man (2002) will also appear. There’s also a couple of shots showing a huge dust storm with lightning shooting out of it. We know that Jamie Foxx is returning as Electro from The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014), but this also suggests that Thomas Hayden Church’s Sandman from Spider-Man 3 (2007) is making a comeback too. And is that also the Lizard from The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) taking a swipe at Peter?
One thing is for sure: This will be the first time Spider-Man will face off against a version of the Sinister Six in live-action, something Sony had been wanting to do for the past decade. Remember, they were supposed to have a Sinister Six movie written and directed by Drew Goddard, only the project fell through after their deal with Disney. I guess having a Sinister Six comprised of Spider-Man villains from the previous two Spider-Man movie franchises will be the closest to achieving this.
The fact that were getting the return of these Spider-Man villains from Sony’s previous cinematic outings are also fueling rumors Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield may be reprising their roles as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, too. Makes sense given the success of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018), and makes for some nice nostalgia bait, too. In any case, we’ll have to wait and see once the “First Official Trailer” (which would really be the second) shows any hints that the MCU Spider-Man gets any web-slinging allies to face off against Marvel’s original team of super-villains.
