Titans season 3: Curran Walters shines in Red Hood origin episode
Curran Walters stuns with an exceptional performance in Titans season 3’s Red Hood flashback episode.
Titans season 3 has been on one heck of a roll. The former DC Universe show has been one of the most popular comic book-inspired TV shows since its debut in 2018, but its third season has exceeded all kinds of expectations, producing its most consistent and thrilling sequence of episodes yet.
The most recent installment, “Lazarus”, continued that string of success for Titans as it flashed back to the beginning of Red Hood’s story, showing us how one of the show’s primary heroes found himself on a downward spiral towards villainy between seasons 2 and 3. It also reaffirmed just how amazing an actor Curran Walters is.
Titans season 3 lets Curran Walters shine in the Jason Todd episode we’ve been waiting for
Curran Walters has long been one of Titans‘ most engaging performers. His portrayal of Jason Todd has been a consistent delight since he made us all sit up and pay attention with his electrifying debut in the fifth episode of the first season. Now, exactly two seasons later, Jason shines brighter than ever in an episode that allows Walters to showcase just how talented he truly is.
More from DC Universe
- James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy casts more major DC characters
- New Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom trailer pushes Arthur to his limits
- 7 actors who could replace Ezra Miller as The Flash in the DC Universe
- Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League will have a battle pass (and that’s a bad sign)
- Harley Quinn renewed for a fifth season on Max (and it’s well-deserved)
Walters is brilliant as Jason, capturing that playful arrogance and inherent recklessness that makes the character so beloved, and he demonstrates plenty of that in “Lazarus”. His best scenes, however, are the tender ones, as we’re allowed to see into the mind of the character on more than one occasion and he is nothing short of sublime on-screen.
This isn’t the first time Walters has been impressive when showing us a more emotional side to Jason (his performance in season 2 earned him our Heroic Actor of the Week award on two occasions) but there’s a gentle nature to his performance as he shows us a much softer side to the character here. The scenes that he shares with Iain Glen’s Bruce Wayne and Krista Bridges’ Leslie Tompkins are among the absolute best of the season.
Walters is reserved, powerful and mesmerizing all at the same time and he proved that we were all right to hope for a Jason Todd-centric episode one day. This is, without question, his finest moment yet – and what a captivating one it is.
New episodes of Titans season 3 debut Thursdays on HBO Max.
