How is Onslaught returning?

Comic book: Way of X No. 5

Since the first issue of Way of X, Nightcrawler has been trying to figure out how to save the souls of the mutants of Krakoa. His mission is becoming more than just a religion. With the help of Legion, Nightcrawler is trying to save Krakoa from being destroyed by Onslaught.

Nightcrawler and Legion discover that Onslaught has been in Xavier, but Xavier can’t know. When he did find out, though, he ended up going crazy. This forced Legion, Xorn, and Zorn to kill Xavier and everyone Onslaught infected. Now, they know how he’s returning: Onslaught is coming back from pieces of resurrected mutants.

Why is this important?

Way of X No. 5 ends with Xavier saying that he can’t save all the mutants. Yet, the mutants that have been saved/resurrected have pieces of Onslaught in them. This is going to make them more aggressive. He’s returning by “eating” parts of the mutants that don’t come back and filling that void with himself.

This means that there are an untold amount of Krakoan mutants with pieces of Onslaught in them. If this keeps happening, he’ll be unleashed on Krakoa and eventually the world. The first time Onslaught appeared, it took the entirety of the Marvel Universe to stop him. But this time, he may be more powerfuland have angry mutants in his control.
