DC’s Legends of Tomorrow season 6 concluded on an appropriately crazy note, but was that the right move?

Legends of Tomorrow dialled up the weirdness in its sixth season, far exceeding the level of craziness fans were used to (and believe me, they’re used to crazy), so it was only fitting that the season conclude with an invasion, a wedding, legitimately magic mushrooms and, um, a live feast.

Sara Lance and the Legends’ trips through both time and space lead them to a house in 1925 so that they can stop Bishop’s plan to wipe out the human race. But somewhere along the line, they end up fighting said aliens in suits and dresses.

It’s all typical of Legends and yet so much further into the abyss of madness than the show is used to going. It will divide people, no doubt, but how did it actually succeed as a finale?

For one more time this season, let’s jump into the madness and digest what went down in “The Fungus Amongus”.

Legends of Tomorrow season 6, episode 15:

Picking up where the previous episode of Legends of Tomorrow left off, the season finale makes little time to delve into the apparent death of John Constantine, along with the death of the Fountain of Imperium. Instead, it sets the stage for the Legends’ plan to revive the fountain by using a younger version of Bishop to help synthesize a cure to the poison bad guy Bishop created.

The cure saves Spooner, who then instructs her mother to leave home because the Zagurons have begun invading and when they hatch in darkness, there could be a lot of death. That realization also drives Sara and Ava to get married now in one of the most beautiful scenes of the season as Mick and Gary respectively walk the co-captains down the aisle.

Bishop interrupts the wedding and plunges 1925 into darkness so that the aliens will hatch early, resulting in a full-on rampage at the house. However, Sara and Ava finish their wedding, radiating a force of love through Spooner’s new fountain-connected powers, destroying every alien in the vicinity, while Mick and Kayla’s newly-hatched alien babies polish off Bishop by literally eating him.

In terms of set up for next season, John Constantine is alive but has a mission away from the Legends, Mick Rory’s departure is also confirmed as he leaves to raise his babies with Kayla and the Waverider is blown up by another Waverider, stranding the Legends in 1925.

Legends of Tomorrow season 6 goes out crazier than ever

I found myself struggling to put my thoughts about “The Fungus Amongus” into words. In part, it was exactly what you expected it to be: Crazy, uncouth and bonkers. On the other hand, it went more all in on the crazy than the show had gone since season 4, and I’m not totally sure that’s a good thing given how season 4 turned out.

Season 6 came in hot, with Legends throwing caution to the wind and doubling down on its outlandishness, but somewhere along the line it got stuck in the same place and produced multiple standalone, game-based episodes that, though entertaining, didn’t necessarily advance the plot.

The finale felt like a mish-mash of the season, showcasing some of its best and worst attributes. The latter came in the form of the first act, which didn’t really move all that much and made the episode drag quite early on. This also prevented the departures of long-time Legend John Constantine and original Legend Mick Rory from having the emotional gravitas that they really should have.

On the positive side of things, though, the episode showcased the one thing that has been the season’s greatest asset: The relationship between Sara Lance and Ava Sharpe. The decision to have “Avalance” get married before “the end of the world” was so on-brand for Legends and it also called back to one of the show’s most beautiful moments in their proposal scene. The fact that their love was enough for the Fountain of Imperium to deem Earth worthy of being saved may have been a little on the nose, but there is a strange genius in Legends of Tomorrow that allows the show to get away with that.

The episode also did a great job in the invasion department, creating a genuinely scary atmosphere for the Zaguron invasion that felt akin to a zombie movie. And even though you knew the team would find a way to make it out alive, you believed that they were in danger nonetheless and that highlights the importance of well-executed stakes – something that this episode had in buckets.

All in all, this was an appropriately outlandish finale for an outlandish season. It worked incredibly well and wrapped up the team’s close encounters (for now). I still think Legends has it in it to be better than this inherently goofy vibe they’re going for, but the show is definitely driving that groove of its home and I can’t fault it for that.

Legendary Leftovers

  • Sara and Ava’s wedding scene was truly beautiful and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t crying tears of happiness. The moment that the proposal music started, I was off.
  • The moment between Ava and Gary was also beautiful. Their unique friendship has been such a focal point of the show over the years and kudos to the writers for allowing it to realize its full potential in the beautiful gesture of Gary walking his beloved “Director Sharpe” down the aisle.
  • The tears also flowed when Spooner and her mother shared a goodbye hug and again when Spooner hugged Astra. The latter pair’s friendship really became one of this season’s greatest accomplishments.
  • I still think Mick and John deserved better, longer send-offs. The conclusion of the episode felt rushed because of how much the earlier portion dragged its feet.
  • Matt Ryan has been an absolute joy to watch as John Constantine and his performance is second-to-none. The Arrowverse and TV in general will miss the presence of the definitive version of the character. That’s for sure, love.
  • It’s also going to be hard to imagine Legends without Mick. He’s become one of the unexpected MVPs of the series and Dominic Purcell really turned the character into a larger-than-life personality. Not bad for a Flash rogue.
  • That is officially my reviews of Legends of Tomorrow season 6 wrapped. As with the previous years, it’s been an unpredictable blast. See you on the Waverider (or, uh, maybe not there this time) for season 7 in six weeks!
