Nia DaCosta has revealed that she once pitched a Marvel Cinematic Universe crossover movie featuring X-Men and Fantastic Four characters.

Director/writer, Nia DaCosta, who recently directed horror-slasher film Candyman is currently directing The Marvels for Marvel Studios. The upcoming movie is set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and it is the sequel to the highly-successful 2019 film Captain Marvel.

Interestingly, however, DaCosta has revealed that she initially pitched a Marvel crossover film to Marvel Studios. In an interview with The Guardian (H/T: Heroic Hollywood), she discussed how she met with producer Mary Livanos, commenting:

"“I just nerded out. I was like, here are the movies I think you should do! Galactus, Storm and Scott Summers team-up movie! Blah! Blah! Blah! She just endured me going in super-deep. And she also gave me a lot of confidence that I would have the creative latitude to not just basically be a puppet on a string.”"

Will Marvel’s Fantastic Four and X-Men crossover happen?

The pitch never came fruition (as of yet at least) but MCU fans have been speculating on when we could actually witness mutants for the first time within the shared universe. As for the Fantastic Four, a reboot was announced to be in development during Disney Investor Day led by Spider-Man: Homecoming director Jon Watts.

DaCosta, coming off this year’s Candyman which has, so far, garnered a $59 million box office gross on a $25 million budget, became the first black woman to reach No.1 at the box office during opening weekend. She is also the youngest filmmaker to direct a Marvel film at the age of 31 – a title previously held by Ryan Coogler, who helmed the record-breaking film Black Panther.

The Marvels stars Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris and Iman Vellani, who will reprise their respective roles as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel, Monica Rambeau and Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel. The screenplay is penned by WandaVision scribe Megan McDonnell. Kevin Feige is producing with Mary Livanos and Matthew Jenkins credited as executive producers.

The Marvels is set for release Nov. 11, 2022.
