David and Jessica Oyelowo are set to produce a reboot of The Rocketeer for Disney+ called The Return of The Rocketeer.

It sounds like Disney is seeking to reinvent one of their properties in the classic cult favorite The Rocketeer. That’s right, the beloved ’90s hero is returning for a brand new adventure.

As revealed by Deadline (H/T: The Hollywood Reporter), David and Jessica Oyelowo are set to produce a reboot of 1991’s The Rocketeer for the studio.

Based on the comic book character of the same name, Billy Campbell starred in the lead role of the original film, playing Cliff Secord – a stunt pilot who stumbled upon a rocket-powered jet-pack and soon attracted the attention of the FBI by becoming a masked superhero.

The action-adventure period-piece was directed by Joe Johnston and also starred Jennifer Connelly, Timothy Dalton, Allan Arkin, Paul Sorvino and Tiny Ron Taylor. Despite being a box office disappointment (grossing a modest $46 million on an approximate $35 million budget), it received positive reviews from critics and has since become something of a cult classic.

The Return of the Rocketeer is coming to Disney Plus

David Oyelowo’s project will serve as a continuation to the 1991 original and it will be titled The Return of The Rocketeer and will feature a retired Tuskegee airman who ultimately takes up the titular mantle.

The Return of The Rocketeer is currently under development for Disney Plus and will be produced by both Oyelowo’s Yoruba Saxon Productions banner. THR mentions that David could be attached to star but it is not yet determined whether he will undertake the leading role.

Ed Ricourt is writing the screenplay, Brigham Taylor will also produce, and Blake Griffin and Ryan Kalil are credited as executive producers for Mortal Media.
