Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy: Doctor Doom plans revealed
By Mark Lynch
Marvel Comics‘ Guardians of the Galaxy may have ended, but not before giving Doctor Doom more power.
Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy just concluded after an amazing run. The series ended after the defeat of the Dread Dormammu (The Last Annihilation). They defeated a Dormmamu whose mere size was destroying planets by his local gravity. Thankfully, the Guardians of the Galaxy had a plan.
The team sent Dormammu back to the dark dimension using a gun. It wasn’t just any old pistol; it was a giant cannon powered by the Nova Force and Star-Lord’s sun power to shoot a bullet made of the mutant-created metal mysterium (see Cable: Reloaded No. 1 for the construction of the gun). It worked and planet-sized Dormammu was defeated.
But, as the phrase goes, out of the frying pan and into the fire. When Doctor Doom showed up and agreed to help the Guardians of the Galaxy, we should have known he was up to something. He always is. Rocket even said that he knows Doom was planning something at the end of the issue. Well, he was right. Doom had this planned way back in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy No. 13.
What was Doctor Doom’s plan?
In issue No. 13 of Marvel Comics‘ Guardians of the Galaxy, Sister Talionis was telling her cult, the Brethren of the Forgotten Flame, to prepare to burn the universe and shape it in their image. Their ceremony caused Dormammu to appear and take over Ego’s body (Guardians of the Galaxy No. 15). Meanwhile, Doctor Doom was trying to steal Emperor Dorrek-Vell’s sword. Both of them failed… or so we thought. It turns out that she was working with Doctor Doom all along.
Doctor Doom wanted Dormammu to enter this reality. He needed it to happen so he could steal magic from the dark entity and keep it for himself. In return for helping Doom, Sister Talionis became Queen of the Chituari.
What’s next for Doctor Doom?
Doctor Doom is always looking for more power. He has tried stealing power from Galactus, the Silver Surfer, and mutants over time. No one should be shocked to discover that he risked the universe in order to obtain more than he had. He’s arrogant enough to think he could never fail. It’s why no one was shocked that he brought Dormamu into this reality for his own needs.
We don’t know what’s going to happen next with Doctor Doom. What we do know is he isn’t happy with the Mutants of Krakoa for not agreeing with him (see S.W.O.R.D. No. 7 for more on that). What else he has planned is unknown. Nevertheless, we can assume that whatever it is, it’ll be big.
