What If…? season 1, episode 8 ending explained: What does [SPOILER] mean?
Marvel’s What If…? left fans in shock yet again, but what did the ending of episode 8 really mean?
Marvel’s What If…? has not been holding back. The Disney Plus series has consistently left fans in awe of the feats that it has pulled off, delivering adventures set in different world after different world.
It really does go to show you that anything can happen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, especially when you change some of the variables that were in play in some of the live-action movies.
However, this week’s installment changed the game altogether as The Watcher came face-to-face with an entity that threatened to not just shake up, change or destroy one universe, but one that sought to obliterate them all.
What happened in What If…? episode 8?
What If…?‘s eighth episode reimagined the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron with a conclusion in which Ultron himself was victorious. The aptly titled “What If… Ultron Won?” saw the sentient machine inhabit Vision’s body and wipe out all of the Avengers before setting his sights on all of mankind.
When that was done, he ventured into space and destroyed every planet in existence (and even killed Thanos with ease) before he found himself alone in the world. That is, until he discovered the existence of The Watcher and the existence of the multiverse.
An all-out brawl between the two ensued before The Watcher retreated to save his own life and ultimately what remained of the multiverse. After that, he met with Doctor Strange Supreme.
What does the ending of What If…? episode 8 mean?
While What If…? has remained something of an episodic series, taking the show in different directions every single week, the most recent episode brought much of that together. While the arrival of Ultron/Vision directly relates to last week’s episode, the fact that there is a single episode based around The Watcher and the multiverse was probably the biggest link to What If…?‘s previous adventures thus far. That is, until the ending scene in which The Watcher arranged a meeting with Doctor Strange Supreme.
That closing scene was a pivotal one because it directly relates back to the events of a previous episode, as the all-powerful, all-watching entity was forced to ask for help from the one person he wouldn’t assist in Episode 4.
As for why The Watcher needs Strange’s help? Well, that’s to stop Ultron’s reign of terror from destroying the multiverse. And the team he is assembling won’t stop there as we’ll see the likes of Captain Carter, Party Thor and the Black Widow from the destroyed universe unite to form the Guardians of the Multiverse.
