What If…? concluded its first season with a memorable ending, but what does it all mean and how does it set up season 2?

The Marvel Cinematic Universe reinvented itself many times throughout What If…?. Possibilities were endless in the gripping animated series from Marvel Studios and Disney Plus as it reimagined many different worlds in which events we’ve come to know from the MCU play out a little bit differently.

After finding himself on the wrong end of Infinity Ultron’s gaze, Uatu The Watcher reached out to Doctor Strange Supreme in the hopes of the dark Sorcerer Supreme helping him stop him. And in the What If…? finale, The Watcher recruited more heroes to aid him in his battle.

Were the Guardians of the Multiverse able to stop Infinity Ultron from destroying everything in existence? And what does the ending of the season finale, “What If… The Watcher Broke His Oath?” really mean?

What does the end of What If…?’s season 1 finale really mean?

With Infinity Ultron unstoppable in his quest to eradicate the multiverse from existence, The Watcher broke his oath and recruited heroes from across the multiverse, including Doctor Strange Supreme, T’Challa Star-Lord, Captain Carter, Party Thor, Post-Apocalyptic Black Widow and Gamora in the hopes of stopping him.

That’s exactly what happened as the Guardians of the Multiverse worked together to defeat Infinity Ultron, with Widow managing to download the Arnim Zola virus into his system through an arrow. While Killmonger tried to betray them take the stones for himself and Zola did the same by trying to take the stones back, Strange locked them both in their own frozen reality and vowed to watch over them for all eternity. Meanwhile the Guardians returned to their own respective universes.

However, Post-Apocalyptic Natasha had no world to return to and thus she was sent to the world of Episode 3 which was now without a Widow after Hank Pym’s attack. Meanwhile, Captain Carter reunited with her Widow in the present-day only to make a shocking discovery.

What does the post-credits scene mean on What If…?

Back on-board the vessel that she was initially on at the beginning of the episode, Captain Carter reunited with Black Widow. However, Natasha had made a shocking discovery during her absence and showed Peggy that the Hydra Stomper was being stored on the vessel… with someone inside.

Remember, Peggy was ripped from her time when she chased the beast into the portal and found herself in the present day during the first episode. She did that to protect Steve, but we don’t know what happened to him after that. And yet, it seems he followed in the footsteps of his MCU counterpart by living a far longer life than expected, frozen in isolation.

Yes, it seems that the lovable Steve Rogers who became the world’s first Iron Man in this universe will indeed be returning, proving that Peggy and Steve are endgame in every universe.
