What If…?: Every episode ranked from best to worst
9. What If… ZOMBIES?
“What If… Zombies?” was always going to be an uphill battle for me, and it is arguably the most polarizing episode of the series. If you like zombies, you probably love this episode. If you don’t like zombies, then you probably weren’t a real big fan.
I am not a huge fan of zombies, so I was never going to appreciate it as much as some. But outside of just being a zombie story, the tone of the story simply didn’t work. On numerous occasions, the Avengers were forced to kill their friends and allies, and it was always played up for a quip instead of having the somber mood it should have had.
It did have some good qualities. Having superpowered zombies is an intriguing twist on the zombie apocalypse trope. And fans were also given the best Hope Van Dyne, aka The Wasp, that we’ve had in the MCU. But these simply don’t outweigh the problems of the rest of the episode.
8. What If… the World Lost its Mightiest Heroes?
This episode of What If…? doesn’t suffer from the same problems as the zombies episode, it just has the distinction of not being as good as some of the other entries. There’s lots of interesting storylines jam packed into one episode.
One of the best aspects of this episode is that it relives an incredibly eventful week for Nick Fury. One of the most difficult aspects to grasp of the early MCU films was the fact that the events of Iron Man 2, Thor, and The Incredible Hulk all take place within a seven day span. This is lost on a lot of people because the stories don’t intersect very much in each individual film.
The show also does something we have yet to see in the MCU but is very prevalent in the comics. Hank Pym drives himself into villainy through a number of events that take place in the comics, and this is an arc for the character the MCU has not explored. To see this aspect of his character explored was interesting to watch in an MCU property.
The only problem really presented with the episode is with the title. If the world lost its mightiest heroes, it would be natural to assume there would be some more to step up in their place. While this is hinted at in the end of the episode, we don’t get anything more than that.
