The Flash season 8 spoilers: Is Eddie Thawne coming back as Cobalt Blue?

Eddie Thawne was a staple of The Flash in its first season. Is Rick Cosnett set to make a comeback in the show’s eighth season?

Poor Eddie Thawne. Once Central City’s most promising young detective, he found the woman of his dreams and started a life with her only to have it ripped away by a world full of metahumans, a villainous descendent from the future and a romance that was written in the… byline of a haunting newspaper from the future. Yes, it’s all very confusing but that’s just Tuesday in Central City for you.

Portrayed by Rick Cosnett, Eddie appeared on the first season of The Flash in a regular capacity. He eventually discovered that Barry Allen was The Flash and that his own descendent was the Scarlet Speedster’s arch-nemesis, Eobard Thawne/Reverse-Flash. And in the ultimate sacrifice, he decided to shoot himself to prevent Eobard from ever being born.

Since then, Eddie has occasionally popped up via time-travel or dream sequences but he’s one of the rare cases in a superhero show in which the seemingly-dead character actually remained dead.

Now rumors are swirling, suggesting that Eddie will finally return in The Flash‘s eighth season. But is it going to happen?

Is Rick Cosnett returning to The Flash in season 8?

Rick Cosnett has excited fans of The Flash by revealing on Instagram that a major announcement is coming in regards to the show. The image that he shared is of him, with much longer hair than he sported back in the show’s first season.

What’s also interesting is that location of that image is listed as “Unknown”, so there is a strong chance that he might be in Vancouver getting ready to film scenes for The Flash season 8.

Is Cobalt Blue in The Flash season 8?

Ever since Eddie’s death in The Flash‘s season 1 finale, fans have theorized about his potential return one day, with many suggesting that he would become the DC Comics character known as Cobalt Blue.

While Eddie Thawne did not exist in DC Comics, Malcolm Thawne did. The twin brother of Barry Allen who did not get the life that his heroic brother did, he was given to the Thawne family after the doctor told Nora Allen that one of the twins was stillborn. As a result, he grew up resenting the fact that Barry had everything he ever craved and turned to magic, using a powerful talisman to get revenge on Barry.

Fans speculated that the necklace Eddie was wearing when he died (and was subsequently sucked into the wormhole above Central City) was a nod to the talisman that Cobalt Blue used in the comics and that Eddie would, one day, return to exact a similar sort of revenge on Barry for the same reasons of having everything he ever wanted (being happily married to Iris and protecting Central City).

Will Eddie return to The Flash in season 8? We’ll have to wait and see. In the meantime, keep a lookout for Rick Cosnett’s exciting announcement!
