Stargirl season 3 is not coming to The CW in 2021

DC’s Stargirl has proven to be a hit for The CW but we’ll have to wait a little longer for Stargirl season 3.

DC’s Stargirl was a summer sensation for The CW two years in a row. The Arrowverse-adjacent show streamed new episodes on the DC Universe streaming service before then airing them the following the day on The CW in the slot usually reserved for Arrowverse heavyweight The Flash. It was so successful that the network decided to pick it up for a second season that would air exclusively on The CW.

That second season then continued the show’s success, with a darker story focused on the demonic evil known as Eclipso – who brought his darkness to Blue Valley.

However, in a move that highlights the confidence that the network has in the former DC Universe original, The CW has already renewed it for a third season. In fact, it renewed it before the show’s second season even premiered.

Unfortunately, it will be some time before Courtney and the JSA graces our screens for adventure No. 3. The CW released the fall line-up of its 2021 – 2022 TV schedule back in May and Stargirl season 3 is not listed among the returning shows.

Stargirl season 3 release date

There are a number of reasons that Stargirl season 3 will not air in the fall of 2021. For starters, the show’s second season only premiered in August, and it took us right up to November – at which point the fall schedule will now kick into effect. Thus, in order to avoid back-to-back airings of seasons 2 and 3, it makes more sense to hold the show to midseason.

Speaking of midseason, The CW has a lot of TV shows to juggle on its schedule right now so it’s understandable that they can’t fit all of them onto it at one time. Not only does the fact that Stargirl has just aired its second season heading into the fall make it the obvious choice to save for the spring, the fact that it’s always functioned as a summer show likely means that The CW will be eager to recreate that success for season 3.

On that note, expect Stargirl season 3 to shine bright on The CW in summer 2022.
