Supergirl season 6 is the show’s last adventure, but why has The CW decided to end it?

Supergirl has been a mainstay of television for over half a decade. The series based on DC Comics’ Girl of Steel took off six years ago with ratings that went up, up and away during its first season on CBS before it then moved to the The CW to join its fellow Arrowverse companions.

The show has enjoyed a highly successful run, producing over 120 episodes across six super seasons. However, the sixth season (which is currently airing on TV) is its final outing.

The announcement was made in September 2020 before production on the final season got underway. Naturally, it left fans of the long-running series devastated.

There was a lot of discussion around the decision to the end the show, with terms like cancellation, low ratings and running out of steam all coming up in fan conversations. The truth is far more simple than that: It was time.

Why is Supergirl ending?

Whenever the decision to end a TV series is made, people are usually quick to assume that it has been cancelled. But that’s not the case with Supergirl. The show has enjoyed an incredibly successful run and, even though the ratings have declined over the years, that has never been quite as big of an issue for The CW as it is for others. Even then, it’s still one of the network’s most-watched shows.

While a decline in ratings probably came up at some point in the conversation, the truth is that the decision to end Supergirl was a joint one made by Warner Bros. TV, The CW and series star Melissa Benoist – who all decided that now was the right time for Kara Zor-El to bow out.

Taking the delays that production faced – and perhaps the ratings – into account, Benoist and the producers decided together that it was best to end the show with an extended final season of 20 episodes.

Supergirl season 6 airs its two-hour finale, the series finale, on Tuesday November 9 on The CW.
