Iron Fist No More: Is Shang Chi the next Immortal Iron Fist?
By Mark Lynch
Marvel Comics’ Iron Fist may be giving up the superhero life.
Back in January, in the Marvel miniseries Iron Fist: Heart Of The Dragon, Danny Rand (a.k.a. The Iron Fist) went through one of the worst battles of his life. In order to save the world, he gave up the Iron Fist to Okoye. That ability was one he couldn’t take or even accept back.
Thankfully, it was given back to an egg of a dragon who will hold the power for the next warrior. This ensures that this legacy continues.
After everything was over, Luke Cage asked Danny what’s next for him. Danny simply said that he would live life “to the fullest.” It looks like he wasn’t kidding. Marvel Comics has announced a new journey for Danny Rand as he’s officially giving up the mantle. The good news is, while he’s giving it up, there will still be another Immortal Iron Fist.
A lot of heroes have claimed that they’re no longer the hero they once were. The “superhero no more” image was made famous from Amazing Spider-Man No. 50 when Peter Parker quit Spidey for a bit. In fact, the Iron Fist No More image, with the costume in the trash, pays tribute to that. In this case, however, we may actually be witnessing the end of the most famous Iron Fist’s time as the hero. The question now is if Danny Rand willingly gave up the title or if it was forced upon him.
What’s next for Danny Rand?
Danny Rand has lost his abilities and can’t get them back. He claims that he wasn’t a good Iron Fist, but that could’ve been his way to deflect and ultimately accept what he lost. Although, this could also be his way of looking at this as a new chapter in his life. He can become a hero without the ability to break a mountain with his hand. We’ve seen heroes without superpowers move mountains in their own way. Danny shouldn’t be any different. And he still has Luke Cage, Colleen Wing, Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and other heroes to help him along the way.
K’un-Lun may be destroyed, but the traditions likely remained. Since that is the case, a new Iron Fist must be available or it will throw off the balance of mystical martial arts. But who is this new Iron Fist? Could Shang-Chi be next in line to use this power.
Is Shang Chi the next Iron Fist?
When a live-action Iron Fist series was commissioned on Netflix, many people wondered if it was time for Marvel to cast an Asian actor as Danny Rand. That didn’t happen, but could we see an Asian character take over the role in the comics?
With the popularity of Shang Chi in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and his current comic book series showing how dominant of a fighter he is, this could be an opportunity to place the character at the center of some more intriguing storylines. Could we see him become the next Iron Fist in the comics? Could it lead to him taking up the mantle in the MCU?
Whoever it is will end up having a heck of a test ahead of them. But it’s exciting to see a new era for Marvel’s Iron Fist.
