Death of Doctor Strange: Will there be a new Sorcerer Supreme?
By Mark Lynch
If Clea and past Doctor Strange don’t find Strange’s murderer, there may never be another Sorcerer Supreme.
The Death of Doctor Strange was just that. Sometimes, when comic book companies announce a death, it’s metaphorical. Not this time. Stephen Strange is dead.
His past self (see Death of Doctor Strange No. 1 for that) and Clea did an autopsy on the deceased. During their work, the two sorcerers found something disturbing: Stephen Strange wasn’t just dead, his soul was taken. With it went the power that makes him Sorcerer Supreme. Until his soul is found, there can’t be another.
Clea explains to the Avengers that the reason the magical warlords left their planes of existence is to run from the Three Mothers. These beings take magical creations and feed it to something they call their child. As mighty as the Avengers are, they can’t defeat the Three Mothers or the child they feed. Only the Sorcerer Supreme can do that.
Clea calls on a spirit named Flibbertigibbet to find what she wishes. When Flibbertigibbet comes back, Clea asks her where the Eye of Agamotto and the Cloak of Levitation is. To no one’s surprise, they are both in Castle Mordo.
When they arrive, Baron Mordo has the Cloak of Levitation and the Eye of Agamotto. Instead of looking smug, however, Mordo looked afraid.
Did Mordo kill Doctor Strange?
When Doctor Strange was found dead, Baron Mordo was one of the first people to appear. Because of the history between Stephen Strange and Mordo, he immediately became one of the primary suspects. However, three things in this issue lead this writer to think he’s innocent.
First of all, Baron Mordo would brag about killing Strange if he were the one to do it. His hubris wouldn’t allow him to hold it in. He’d gladly tell the heroes he did it, especially if it came with the power of the Sorcerer Supreme. Second, when we saw Mordo holding Strange’s items, he was scared. He most likely stole them or they appeared in his castle unbeknownst to him.
That leads us to the third thing. If you notice, Clea didn’t ask Flibbertigibbet to find who killed Doctor Strange. She asked her to find what she wishes. That seemed suspicious. Clea says that she got her memories of Doctor Strange after he died. That may not be the case. Is she the one who killed him and is now putting the blame on Mordo to throw everyone off her trail?
