Superman and Lois is one of the biggest new TV shows of the year. But who plays the Man of Steel on the show?

The world is talking about the Man of Steel… again.

The legendary comic book character is a veteran of the big and small screens, headlining countless film and TV adaptations since his DC Comics debut back in 1938. Now, he’s back on the latter, starring in the new TV series Superman & Lois.

Superman and Lois took the world by storm, but if you haven’t watched it yet, you might find yourself wondering about the show’s cast.

So, with the first season set to premiere on BBC One in the UK and the second season about to arrive in the US, let’s take this opportunity to introduce you to the man behind the Superman.

Superman and Lois cast: Who plays the Man of Steel?

Superman is portrayed by Tyler Hoechlin on Superman & Lois. The actor initially played Clark Kent/Kal-El of Krypton on Supergirl, appearing in multiple episodes of the show’s second season in 2016 before returning for the show’s various crossovers with The Flash, Arrow, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow and Batwoman.

Before that, he was best known for starring in Teen Wolf as the alluring Derek Hale and 7th Heaven as Martin Brewer. But he also made waves in his younger days, playing Michael Sullivan Jr. (the son of Tom Hanks’ character) in the critically-acclaimed Road to Perdition.

Hoechlin has received acclaim for his performance as the Man of Steel, with fans praising how he nails the character’s inherent optimism and uplifting feel. The news that he would be headlining his own spin-off series was welcome, but long overdue, with fans calling for an Arrowverse series focusing on Superman since his debut.

Superman & Lois premieres in the UK on BBC One on Saturday, December 4 at 5:40 p.m. (just before Strictly Come Dancing). It returns to US screens for its second season on Tuesday, January 11 on The CW.
