14 best superhero TV shows of 2021
WandaVision
There wasn’t ever really any doubt was there? The first of the Marvel Studios shows to arrive on Disney Plus (and very first of the superhero TV shows to debut or return this year), WandaVision set a bar so high that none have managed to come close to recreating its success.
What did it do? Well, the more appropriate question to ask would be: What didn’t it do? A myriad of genres, styles, aesthetics and just about every other defining feature, WandaVision wasn’t constrained by boundaries or norms of television conventions, paying tribute to classic ones while decimating all of them; just as Wanda Maximoff wasn’t about to let something as fixed as death prevent her from recreating the perfect life that had been so cruelly ripped from her before it even started.
No amount of words would ever be enough to encapsulate what WandaVision accomplished. With its nods to various classic sitcoms to how it used them to further one of the most tragic stories on TV this year, the Emmy-winning saga broke new ground for the comic book medium and proved that no feat was too large for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And it was all held together by Elizabeth Olsen’s remarkable, career-defining performance.
