The Suicide Squad holds a weird place in the DCEU. When it was first announced, many people were confused if this was a relaunch or a sequel. And as we’ve come to find out, it is basically serving as both.
John Cena played the role of Peacemaker in the film. Peacemaker’s belief is peace should be preserved at all costs, no matter how many people he has to kill to ensure the peace. And this is why Peacemaker became an ideal candidate for Amanda Waller’s crew.
While Peacemaker served on the team of antiheroes throughout the film, his turn at the end allowed John Cena to continue to showcase his talents as an actor. And while it appeared he dies at the end of the movie, the post credits scene for The Suicide Squad was setting up the upcoming HBO Max series in which we’ll learn more of the backstory of the character while John Cena fleshes him out for us in what should be a fun series.
It’s hard to judge the financial success of The Suicide Squad. According to Box Office Mojo, the film had a budget of $185 million and it only took in $167 million world wide. The problem with judging it strictly by its box office numbers is the fact it was released simultaneously on HBO Max for 30 days.
You’re always welcome to make your own justification about the quality of a movie. The Suicide Squad can currently be watched for free with an HBO Max Subscription.
