The Batman, starring Robert Pattinson, will be released later this year. But how dark will the movie be and is it suitable for family viewing?

The Batman is one of the most anticipated movies of 2022. Directed by Matt Reeves and starring Robert Pattinson as the Dark Knight, it looks to reboot the Batman franchise all over again with a new kind of tale.

The first solo movie featuring DC Comics’ Caped Crusader since 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises, it will not be tied to the recent DCEU films that featured Ben Affleck in the role and will look to launch its own universe instead – a universe that already has multiple spin-offs in the works.

It also boasts an impressive cast, with Pattinson’s hero being joined by Zoe Kravitz as Selina Kyle / Catwoman, Paul Dano as Edward Nashton / The Riddler, Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner James Gordon, Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot / The Penguin and Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth. Furthermore, Eternals star Barry Keoghan will appear in a role that has sparked a ton of speculation online.

One major point of discussion in regards to The Batman is the film’s age rating. After much speculation, it has been officially confirmed.

The Batman age rating

The Batman is rated PG-13. According to the MPAA, it has received that rating for “strong violent and disturbing content, drug content, strong language, and some suggestive material”.

The film’s promotional material has gone to great lengths to highlight how dark the movie will be, with many suggesting that it might be rated R. However, it seems that it wasn’t quite extreme enough to warrant an R rating.

That being said, the movie does look to be quite dark, so of all the superhero movies out there, The Batman might not be the best choice for family viewing, so it’s definitely best to be cautious about going to see it with any younger family members.

The Batman hits theaters on March 4, 2022.
