Flashpoint returns to DC Comics in Flashpoint Beyond.

DC Comics’ Flashpoint is one of the most popular series in all of comic books.

The universe it is named after was created when Barry Allen, a.k.a. The Flash, went back in time to stop his mother from being killed. This inadvertently caused the entire universe to change, with Wonder Woman and Aquaman’s war destroying most of the world. On top of that, Superman was trapped and being experimented on, and Bruce Wayne was killed instead of Thomas and Martha Wayne, turning Thomas into Batman and Martha into The Joker.

We’ve seen the return of Thomas Wayne in Batman by Tom King (see Batman No. 72 and City of Bane for more on that). However, that was it. The DC Comics Flashpoint Universe was supposedly destroyed. But as comic book fans know, nothing is really gone forever.

Now IGN has revealed that writer Geoff Johns will return for a limited series called Flashpoint Beyond.

Flashpoint Beyond and the Clockwork Killer

In Flashpoint Beyond, Thomas Wayne will be the protagonist. After seeing his son Bruce come back stronger after being broken and having a key role in Infinite Frontier, Thomas will return to his universe with a different approach. Co-writer of Flashpoint Beyond Jeremy Adams said,

"“In the first Flashpoint, Thomas fixed the timeline. His son grew up, became the Batman we know and love, and what’s more – Thomas saw the fruits of his sacrifice. So, imagine thinking that has been taken away. He is back in the nightmare of that world still existing without his son…It’s the driving force behind his motivation for the series.”"

On top of that, Geoff Johns told IGN that there’s a villain named Clockwork Killer that threatens all of reality. He says,

"“The Clockwork Killer is a single story. A mystery that will affect Thomas Wayne and all of reality. There will be new characters and concepts between the panels, things that will appear as throwaways at first… but it’s all tightly woven together.”"

The creative team also promises new characters like Dexter Dent (the son of Harvey Dent) as well as some that we saw in the original Flashpoint series.

This writer fully expects this limited series to fly off the shelves and be beloved by many comic book fans. Even if it isn’t, there’s one thing for certain: Whatever happens at the end of this series will impact the pages of DC Comics for a long time to come. It might even leak over to DC Comics’ Earth Prime.
