Gotham Knights: All you need to know about The CW’s possible new Bat-Family series
A new series called Gotham Knights is being produced by the same creative group behind Batwoman set in a different continuity outside the Arrowverse.
As revealed by Deadline, The CW Network is looking to continue expanding on DC-related content with a drama known as Gotham Knights on its way, being produced by the same creative team behind Batwoman. Executive producers Chad Fiveash and James Stoteraux and Batwoman executive story editor Natalie Abrams are attached to the project.
Gotham Knights is based on characters from DC Comics created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger. Greg Berlanti’s Berlanti Productions is producing the series with Warner Bros. Television.
What is Gotham Knights about?
The superhero drama written and developed by Abrams, Fiveash and Stoteraux appears to draw some elements from the upcoming game of the same name developed by WB Games Montreal, but at the same time reinventing the premise. The synopsis reads as follows:
"“In the wake of Bruce Wayne’s murder, his rebellious adopted son forges an unlikely alliance with the children of Batman’s enemies when they are all framed for killing the Caped Crusader. And as the city’s most wanted criminals, this renegade band of misfits must fight to clear their names. But in a Gotham with no Dark Knight to protect it, the city descends into the most dangerous it’s ever been. However, hope comes from the most unexpected of places as this team of mismatched fugitives will become its next generation of saviors known as the Gotham Knights.”"
On a surface level, this does sound like it could draw inspiration from the Gotham Knights game in that its premise follows a heroic figure like Batman being taken down and an adoptive child of that legend standing in and gathering a group of young heroes to save their city in honor of their fallen champion.
When will Gotham Knights be released?
No release date has been confirmed for Gotham Knights given that the show is in early development. However, if it is picked up to series, it would likely air sometime in the 2022 – 2023 TV season, joining whichever of its Arrowverse counterparts return for new seasons.
It might not be the only new superhero series as Arrowverse spin-off Justice U is also in development with Arrow‘s David Ramsey set to reprise his role as John Diggle.
Who is producing Gotham Knights and will it be an Arrowverse show?
Natalie Abrams, Chad Fiveash and James Stoteraux are writing the series. Fiveash, Stoteraux, Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and David Madden serve as executive producers on Gotham Knights. Abrams is a co-executive producer.
Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. TV is producing the series for The CW.
What is interesting is how will this show fit into the respective in-story continuity The CW has established up until this point. As Bruce Wayne’s disappearance has already been used as the catalyst for Batwoman, the likely case is that Gotham Knights will be set within its own continuity outside the Arrowverse ala Titans, Doom Patrol and Stargirl.
