James Gunn could be set to return to the DCEU with a new The Suicide Squad spin-off. He’s also hopeful about Peacemaker’s future.

James Gunn sure knows how to produce a successful project. His current DCEU offering Peacemaker has reportedly been killing it (no pun intended) on HBO Max. It debuted on the streaming service a number of weeks ago to rave reviews from fans and critics and it is now among the top streaming performers.

To top it off, The Suicide Squad could be getting a second spin-off series. Speaking to Deadline, Gunn revealed that he was working on “another TV show that’s connected to that universe”. He didn’t say what it was, but it’s enough to get fans excited at the chance of more DCEU content from him.

On that note, he also believes there is “a really good chance” that Peacemaker will get a second season given its popularity.

Could Peacemaker’s success expand the world of The Suicide Squad?

While we don’t quite know who would star in that potential new The Suicide Squad spin-off, the news highlights how successful that chapter of the DCEU has been.

Deadline notes that Idris Elba and Margot Robbie’s schedules would potentially be too busy to allow either Bloodsport or Harley Quinn to return right now, but that doesn’t necessarily rule them out long term. That said, some other suggestions for the lead of the in-development HBO Max series could include Daniela Melchior’s Ratcatcher 2, Peter Capaldi’s Thinker and Sylvester Stallone’s King Shark.

Peacemaker came to fruition during 2020’s lockdown in which Gunn was completing post-production on The Suicide Squad. Speaking to Deadline’s Hero Nation podcast, he discussed how The Suicide Squad‘s day and date release in theaters and on HBO Max during the pandemic wasn’t great as it reduced box office figures (which is what happened with Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman 1984 – a film that also underperformed when compared to the first Wonder Woman film). Though, he did acknowledge how things ultimately worked out because of how well Peacemaker has done since the show came out earlier in the month.

Gunn said it was amazing that Peacemaker has become the success it has as it has gotten more people to sign up to HBO Max. He further explained that the creation of the series came from his boredom and his anxiety during the lockdown. Essentially, it was his way of calming himself down in the midst of the chaos that was going on during that time. And its ultimate success could very well have allowed Gunn to continue to expand this world he started with The Suicide Squad.

Finally, the writer-producer-director extraordinaire said he, the cast, and crew loved working on the series. Fingers crossed that there’s more coming as we’ve been loving Peacemaker.
